Playback of the hidden camera

“Play it again.” I pressed the remote, the screen flickering to life.

The grainy feed showed the shipyard’s main office, the fluorescent hum a dull backdrop.

Derek stood by the desk, his shoulders tense, his eyes darting to the window.

A figure slipped in, face hidden behind a black mask, gloved hands clasping a small, sealed envelope.

They met in the center, the air humming with the sound of distant machinery.

Derek’s voice was low, almost a whisper, “You know the risk.”

The masked person replied with a curt nod, slipping the envelope into Derek’s palm.

For a heartbeat the camera caught the faint tattoo on the back of the masked hand—a serpent coiled around a dagger.

Then the figure turned, gliding toward the exit as if the floor itself bowed beneath their steps.

The screen froze on the moment the envelope thudded against the desk, a sound sharper than the clatter of tools.

I felt the cold surge of betrayal rise in my throat, the image looping in my mind.

Julian’s confession and the shot

“Julian, who was that?” I demanded, voice cracking, fingers white on the armrest.

He swallowed, eyes flicking to the darkened hallway, then back to me.

“It’s… my mother.” He whispered, the words hanging like a blade.

“My mother? The one they said died in the fire?”

He nodded, a tremor shaking his hands. “She survived. She’s the one running the syndicate inside the shipyard. She’s been pulling strings for fifteen years.”

The revelation slammed into me, a weight I could not lift.

I stood, heart hammering, the monitor humming behind me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked, voice a thin thread.

He opened his mouth, then a crack split the silence.

Bang.

The sound echoed down the hallway, reverberating off metal and concrete.

I spun, breath caught, and found Julian slumped on the floor, a spray of crimson blooming around his head.

His eyes stared up at the ceiling, a thin line of blood tracing his cheek.

Everything around me blurred, the revelation of his mother’s face burning behind the roar of the gunshot.
