Homecoming, the Night That Turned Real

My shoes clacked on the marble hallway as I fumbled for the front door, still hearing Lily’s tiny voice echoing, “Daddy’s there.”

The house smelled of lavender air freshener and the faint metallic tang of fresh cut grass from the pool.

“Mara, you’re late,” Gerald’s voice floated from the kitchen, warm but distant, as he turned to hand me a glass of water.

I forced a smile, my throat dry, and took the glass without looking.

“Thanks,” I murmured, eyes scanning the dim living room. My mind replayed the spotlight catching the glint in his ear.

There, half‑lit by the hallway lamp, lay a tiny silver object, slick with dried blood.

I knelt, heart hammering, and lifted it with trembling fingers.

It was a cufflink—one of those ornate ones Nathaniel used to wear on his wedding photos, now stained crimson.

“God,” I whispered, the word shattering the silence.

My breath fogged the glass as I examined the tiny hinge, the way it caught the light like a promise broken.

“Mara?” Gerald’s tone shifted, concern sharpening his words.

“Did you… did you notice this?” I held the cufflink up, the blood glistening like a cruel joke.

He stared, eyes widening, then narrowing as if searching for an explanation that wasn’t there.

“I swear I have no idea how that got there,” he said, voice low, the smile gone.

My mind raced, recalling Lily’s frantic pointing, the ghostly pallor on Gerald’s face.

“It was behind your ear, Lily said. She wouldn’t make that up.”

He swallowed, the silence thickening, and I felt a chill crawl up my spine.

Confrontation and the Sudden Collapse

“Show me,” I demanded, voice steadier than I felt, “where you think it’s coming from.”

Gerald stepped back, hand brushing the back of his neck, as if the cufflink might still be lodged there.

“Mara, I… I’m sorry. I don’t—”

Before he could finish, the front door swung open with a force that rattled the picture frames.

Victor, Gerald’s business partner, stalked in, his suit immaculate, his eyes sharp as knives.

“What’s going on here?” he asked, his voice cutting through the tension.

“Victor, you need to leave this alone,” I snapped, clutching the cufflink tighter.

He smirked, stepping closer, his shadow lengthening across the floor.

“Mara, you’ve always been... protective. This isn’t your fight.”

Gerald’s shoulders slumped, his gaze flickering between us.

“Victor, I told you—this is about Nathaniel. You know what I mean.”

Victor’s lips curled, a thin line of warning.

“Stay away, Mara. For your own sake.”

His words hung heavy as the lights above flickered, the bulbs buzzing like angry insects.
