Resignation on the Courthouse Steps

I slipped the thin, official resignation slip into Dr. Pierce’s palm, feeling the paper’s crisp edge bite my thumb.

He stared at it, eyebrows knitting. “Claire, you’re sure? This is a big step.”

My voice was flat, the hum of the fluorescent lights above us a relentless backdrop. “I’ve already signed the Seattle offer. I start in six weeks.”

He let out a low sigh, the sound swallowed by the distant laughter of a newly‑wed couple down the hall.

“Six weeks,” he repeated, as if testing the words. “That’s... a concrete deadline.”

My eyes drifted to the hallway where Ethan lingered, his lab coat still hanging over his shoulders, his hand half‑wrapped around a coffee cup.

He didn’t notice me turn away, didn’t see the weight of my bag as I lifted it from the bench.

“I need to pack,” I said, voice barely louder than the fluorescent buzz. “I’m leaving the department tomorrow.”

He offered a weak smile that didn’t reach his eyes, and turned back to his clipboard, oblivious to the finality of my words.

The hallway stretched, the echo of his footsteps a faint reminder that the world kept moving while my life pivoted.

In the corner, a small blue jewelry bag lay forgotten, its shimmer a cruel reminder of the marriage that would never be.

I closed the courthouse door behind me, the weight of my packed suitcase thudding against the floor like a promise.

Video, Silence, and a Sudden Darkness

Back in our apartment, the glow of the laptop screen painted my face pale, the same shade as the dress I’d left behind.

The video replayed: Ethan’s smile, Sophia’s hand slipping onto his thigh, her whisper—

“I’m sorry, Claire. I never meant for this to happen.”

My heart hammered, a staccato rhythm that matched the ticking of the clock on the wall.

The shower steam drifted out as Ethan emerged, towel wrapped, his shoulders still damp, eyes glazed with confusion.

“Claire?” he asked, voice soft, as he stepped into the doorway.

My stare was empty, a glass‑y blank that reflected nothing of the betrayal playing on screen.

He tried to bridge the distance, words tumbling out in a rush, “It’s not what it looks—”

I cut him off, “Save it.” The room felt suddenly too small.

The phone on the nightstand rang, a harsh, insistent chirp that cut through the heavy silence.

I lifted it, glanced at the caller ID—Pacific Crest Medical Center. My breath caught.

“Dr. Bennett, we’re pleased to confirm your acceptance,” the voice said, bright and formal.

I hung up, the line still buzzing with static, and felt Ethan’s hand tremble as it reached for mine.

He whispered, “Please, Claire, let’s talk.”

Before I could answer, the lights flickered, the fluorescent tubes sputtering like dying fireflies.

Darkness slammed over us, a total, swallowing black.

A muffled click echoed, and a gun barrel rose, aimed directly at Ethan.

Section 3 – The Darkness Falls

The lights sputtered and went out, plunging the apartment into a thick, humming black.

A gasp ripped through the silence, followed by a high‑pitched scream.

Dr. Ramos burst through the hallway door, his lab coat a chaotic blur.

“Everyone out! A pathogen escaped the containment unit—bio‑hazard level four!” he shouted, his voice cracking.

Ethan’s eyes widened; his hand twitched toward the door, then froze.

I felt the thump of my own pulse echoing in my ears.

“Claire, we have to go—now!” he whispered, desperation threading his tone.

I stared at the doorway, at the black void beyond, at the trembling man I’d loved.

My training kicked in, precise and calm.

“We can’t just leave the guard,” I said, gripping the flashlight that slipped from my bag.
