I Thought She Came Back to Be a Mother, But It Turns Out She Was Just Chasing a Dream
Falling Out
After I read the letter aloud, the room’s atmosphere shifted. A silent storm brewed, and the girls exchanged bewildered glances. I felt their eyes on me, waiting for an explanation I didn’t have. The kitchen, once a sanctuary, felt like a battleground.
Amanda’s expression contorted into something unrecognizable. “Who sent this?” she demanded, voice cracking. “How did you get that?”
“I don’t know! I just got it!” I shouted back, my frustration boiling over. “You’ve been gone! You can’t come back, and if this is truly a homecoming, it comes with answers!”
She recoiled as if I had struck her. “Answers? I thought I was building something here. I thought I could—”
“You thought you could buy back our lives! But guess what, Amanda? Memories don’t come with a price tag!”
For a moment, silence engulfed us. The girls stood frozen, caught between loyalty to their mother and the reality of her past. I felt the walls close in, and then I saw Amanda’s eyes darting toward the door, an instinct that screamed escape. “I can’t deal with this right now. Not here.”
And before I could respond, Amanda turned and bolted out of the house, her footsteps echoing in the hallway like a ghost. I was left standing in the kitchen, the painful quiet wrapping around me like a shroud. What had I done?
Aftermath
In the days that followed, I expected Amanda to return, but she never did. I held onto the letter, the sender's name written in familiar handwriting, and felt the weight of a past I longed to uncover. But what if it shattered the fragile balance we had? I didn’t want to pull the girls into a whirlwind of consequences.
