I Thought My Father Was Just Unlucky in Love Until My Best Friend Disappeared Too

I Thought My Father Was Just Unlucky in Love Until My Best Friend Disappeared Too Save

Desperation in Briarwick Lane

The moment I stepped into Maren's apartment, an oppressive silence swallowed me whole. The air was thick with a tangle of memories, and her empty coffee cup sat on the table—just like it did last night, when we laughed and shared secrets. Now, dread prickled at my fingertips as I moved toward her bedroom.

The door creaked open, revealing a sanctuary turned tomb. I scanned the room, heart racing. I could feel Maren's absence pressing against me, suffocating. “Where are you?” I whispered, wishing for some sign.

As I rifled through books and clothes, I stumbled upon her diary tucked beneath a stack of papers. The cover was worn, and my hands trembled as I opened it. The pages flipped fast, revealing entries filled with her neat handwriting. But then, one entry stopped me cold.

“Date with Elias was magical... but I felt a shadow lurking.”

My breath caught in my throat. I continued reading, my heart pounding. Maren's words transformed from excitement to fear, detailing her growing unease about something she couldn't name. “It feels like something is watching,” she’d written, a chill racing down my spine. I realized, suddenly, this was more than mere bad luck.

This was something insidious. I reread the entry, feeling a weight settle in my stomach. “What did you discover?” I murmured to no one.

I closed the diary, my mind racing. All those women had vanished, and now, Maren had joined them. There had to be a connection—something I could uncover. I needed to figure out what was happening before it was too late.

Shadows of the Past

The next day, I met with an old family friend, Clara, who knew my mother when she was alive. The warm sunlight drifted into the café, but I felt an icy grip on my heart. “What do you remember about my father, Elias?” I asked, desperation creeping into my voice.

Clara's gaze turned distant, as if she was peering into a past that hurt to remember. “Your father loved your mother dearly,” she said slowly. “But there were always rumors, dark whispers.”

“What kind of whispers?” I pressed, leaning in closer. My instincts screamed that I was on the brink of discovering a terrible truth.

“He never spoke about it—something involving a woman… a powerful woman.”

She looked around nervously before continuing. “They said she practiced dark magic, something that could bind a soul.” My blood ran cold. How could my father have been involved in something so sinister?

As I pieced together the fragments, unease coiled within me. I needed answers. Suddenly, the doorbell of my apartment rang, shattering my thoughts. I rushed to the door, my heart racing.

Upon opening it, I was greeted by a package: unmarked, sealed with a dark red wax. My hands shook as I tore it open, and inside lay a letter addressed to me—my name scrawled in a familiar but shaky hand. It was a letter from one of the missing women.

“No,” I gasped, dread settling in my stomach like a stone. Just as I began to piece things together, I received a strange package at my door—it's a letter addressed to me from one of the missing women.

With trembling hands, I tore open the letter. The crisp paper felt foreign, filled with a dread I could hardly comprehend. The woman’s neatly scrawled handwriting was urgent, frantic even. “You need to know about the curse,” it read. “Your father’s love life is not what it seems.”

Each line twisted my stomach further. She described her date with my father, how enchanting he was, but also something darker lingering beneath the surface. “I can’t explain it,” she wrote, “but fear settled inside me like a heavy stone after our evening together.”

My heart raced as I recalled Maren’s terrified voice. Could this really be happening? The words blurred together as panic washed over me. I dropped the letter, my mind racing. What did it mean? A curse? No, that was insane.

Just then, an insistent knock shook me from my thoughts. I rushed to the door, my pulse quickening. It swung open, revealing my father, Elias, looking more disheveled than I’d ever seen him. His hair was unkempt, worry etched in every line of his face. “Have you seen Maren?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

“You need to tell me everything,” I demanded, stepping back to let him in, my mind racing with questions. “This letter…” I held it up, the edges crinkling in my grip as I thrust it toward him. “It says there’s a curse.”

His eyes widened, a flicker of recognition crossing his face. “A curse?” he echoed, confusion mixing with fear. “That’s just superstition.”

“It’s not just superstition!” I shouted, anger bubbling over. “Maren has disappeared, just like the others. You need to explain what’s going on.”

He ran a hand through his hair, sighing deeply. “Ever since your mother died, I’ve received strange messages,” he confessed, his voice shaky. “I thought they were just my mind playing tricks on me. They never made sense.”

“What kind of messages?” I pressed, my heart racing. This was not just about Maren anymore. There was something darker at play. But before he could answer, my phone buzzed violently on the table. I glanced at it, a cold shiver racing down my spine.

It was a message from the same sender as Maren’s letter. “Stay away from your father,” it read ominously. “Or you will face the same fate.”

I looked back at Elias, breathing heavily. “What did you do to them?” I felt the accusation clawing at my throat. But there was a flicker in his eyes, something I hadn’t seen before—hope. “I think... I think I can break the curse,” he stammered, almost to himself.

My Father’s Confession

“Dad, please,” I said, trembling as I faced him in the dim light of our living room. “What really happened to those women?”

He looked away, running his fingers through his hair, a telltale sign of his anxiety. “I can’t—”

“You need to! They all vanished, and now Maren!” My voice wavered, panic rising. “I need the truth.”

He inhaled deeply. “It’s not what you think. I... I had a relationship years ago. With a woman who practiced dark magic.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. “What do you mean? Dark magic?”

“Her name was Seraphine. It was all-consuming, but when I tried to end it, she cursed me.” His eyes looked haunted. “She said I would never find love again.”

I was pinned in place, shocked and confused. “But you’ve always been unlucky. Is it the curse?”

“I didn’t believe her then, but now… I think she might have meant it.” His voice cracked, layered with regret. “After each date, I felt this darkness following me, but I pushed it away.”

A flicker of hope sparked within his despair. “But maybe there’s a way to break it. If we figure out what she said…”

“And how do we do that?” I asked, desperation creeping into my voice.

“I’ll remember. Just give me time,” he replied, his gaze steadfast for the first time in days. “We can fix this. Together.”

Unraveling the Past

As we spent the next few days poring over old photographs and notes about Seraphine, an unease twisted in my gut. The more we uncovered, the more the pieces of our family history seemed to align.

I sat hunched over a faded letter when a chill swept through the room. “Dad, look at this,” I said, holding it up. “She was obsessed with death and love.”

Just then, my phone buzzed, breaking the heavy silence. A new message. My heart raced as I read it: “Stay away from him or you’ll share the same fate.”

“It’s from the sender,” I whispered. “Why does this feel so familiar?”

“It’s not safe,” my father cautioned, but I was already searching through my old messages. I needed to know who it was.

After a few frantic taps, I found a thread I hadn’t noticed before. My breath caught in my throat. The sender’s name glared at me: ‘Mom.’

“No, no, it can’t be,” I stammered. “She’s dead!”

“What? What does it say?” he urged, a touch of fear creeping into his voice.

“She’s been watching us,” I realized, every word chilling me further. “She’s the one tied to this.”

Understanding washed over me like ice water. “Her death wasn’t an accident, was it?”

“What do you mean?” His eyes widened in realization, the color draining from his face.

“She cursed you to keep you from moving on!” I shouted, the truth unraveling before us like a grotesque tapestry. “This was her plan all along.”

My father’s expression changed, despair morphing into horror. “We have to stop this,” he pleaded. “We need to find a way to break this hold she has on us.”

But deep inside, the gnawing realization struck me: my mother had turned love into her weapon, ensuring he would never be free.
