I Thought I Was Protecting My Family Until They Ruined Me While I Was Asleep
The Other Side
Days passed. Chloe's wedding happened. I was a ghost.
Every inch of me felt frayed. I didn’t attend the ceremony. Instead, I spent the day in a rented studio apartment, staring out a window at a street I didn’t recognize.
Still, the weight of my family’s choices pressed against me.
Chloe called. Texted. I ignored them all.
The quiet in my new space was deafening. Until a knock shattered the stillness.
I didn't want to answer. I didn’t want to face anyone, especially not her.
“Harper, I know you’re in there!”
It was Chloe. Her voice cracked on the last word. Whatever facade she wore had slipped.
I opened the door, my heart racing.

My mind raced. I had the proof—all the documents, the hidden motives, all the crimes the Sterlings were likely committing.
“Maya, I need your help,” I whispered, pulling my phone out as the tremor in my hand grew.
Unraveled Threads
Then her phone buzzed on the floor, lighting up with a text that made my stomach drop.
“Harper, stay away. We can’t talk.”
I stared at Chloe, who paled as realization spread across her face.
“What did you do?” she whispered, stepping forward.
I shook my head, backing away. “You don’t get to play the victim here.”
“Harper, they’re watching us. You don’t know how far they’ll go.”
“But you do.”
“You’re being paranoid!”
“Am I?”
But
