The Unraveling

The chaos of that moment might have blurred the world around us, but my thoughts were crystal clear. I reached for my phone, the one link I still had to my reality, to my daughters. “You know they’re home now, right?” I asked, hoping to ground the conversation in what truly mattered.

“You brought them home?” he asked, disbelief etched in his features.

“Of course I did,” I said. “They are mine, Daniel. You may have left, but I never did.”

Claire looked at Daniel, searching for anything to justify his actions. “But you were on a cruise, Daniel. For four months?”

Claire backed up a little, a firm grip in her bag, as if preparing to make her exit.

“I told you already—” Daniel began to explain, but I cut him off.

“You hurt me, and now you’re trying to gaslight me into believing I’m the irrational one?” I pointed at him, anger flaring inside me.

“This isn’t a conversation we should have in public,” he insisted, his voice barely above a whisper.

“But it’s the only conversation worth having right now.”

At that moment, I didn’t know where this would lead, but I felt the air shift in the room. What was it going to take for him to realize the weight of his deception?

The story continues…
