I Thought I Lost Her for Good, But the Children Revealed a Truth I Never Knew
Unearthing Lies
The café buzzed around us as I pulled out my phone. My hand shook slightly as I dialed the number of my former office. I needed clarity, needed to know if anyone remembered that woman.
“Brad,” I said when my former coworker picked up. “Do you remember a woman who was involved with me a few years back? A serious relationship?”
“Evan? Yeah, Rachel, right?”
I felt a surge of frustration. “No, someone else. She said she was part of my life, but I never knew her.”
“Oh, you mean Emily. She was always lurking. Real shady, honestly.”
I clenched my jaw. “What else? Anything you can recall?”
“Just that she told people you didn’t want to be tied down. She pretended to be your friend but never had your back.”
I looked at Rachel, my heart pounding. Her expression mirrored my own. “That’s it? She made this all up?”
“Seems so,” Brad said. “I always thought she had a thing for you. You should be careful.”
“That’s why she seemed so familiar,” Rachel whispered, piecing together the fragments. “Evan, we need to find her.”
Fear clawed at my insides. “What if she’s dangerous?”
“Or knows something vital,” Rachel replied. “Places like that never forget.”
We left the café in a daze, determination propelling us forward. I felt the children’s eyes on me, their innocence a heavy reminder of the stakes.
The Unexpected Caller
Back at my apartment, we rifled through boxes, hoping to find anything that connected Emily to the letters. The sunlight streamed through the window, casting long shadows that danced across the floor.
