Unraveling Threads

“Margaret, what’s wrong?” Amanda’s voice sliced through my thoughts. I fought to compose myself but felt the tremors of fear and confusion rise in me.

“Just reading something,” I murmured, my voice barely a whisper. “Please, give me a moment.”

My heart was a drum solo in my chest, each beat echoing Robert’s decision from so long ago. I had never truly known his fears, his struggles.

How had I missed this? How had I built my life on assumptions that had only been half the truth? I felt anger welling up within me, a fierce protectiveness for the children, leaving me conflicted. Did he leave us because he thought it was best? Or had I simply not been enough to make him stay?

“Mama, what does it say?” Sophie asked gently, and I could hear both concern and curiosity in her voice.

I looked up, searching the faces of my children. Each one held a part of Robert — their laughter, their quirks, their very existence built upon the love we had shared. But even that could not soften the impact of his words.

"I feared returning would tear open everything they'd survived."

“He… he was sick,” I managed to say, my voice breaking. “He thought he was going to die.” The calm and reassuring facade I had built fractured. I felt raw, exposed.

“So he just left?” Derrick asked, confusion wrinkling his brow.

“Yes. He thought it would be easier...” I trailed off. I wanted to scream, to rail against the injustice of it. After all those years, it felt like a betrayal, yet something deeper gnawed at me — the fear that maybe I had played a part in it.

The truth settled heavily, like a storm cloud low in the sky, suffocating and all-consuming. “He thought we’d be better off without him.”

As I spoke, I felt the children’s eyes on me. They had already suffered loss, and now, this revelation reawakened shadows of grief that had begun to fade.
