Beneath the Surface

When we arrived back at Clara’s home, an unsettling silence greeted us. She should have been there, or at least returned by now. Noah and I exchanged glances, a shared understanding passing through us. We climbed the front steps, the wood creaking under our weight.

With each step, my heart thudded louder, a metronome keeping time with the tension building within me. I reached for the spare key Grandma had mentioned, feeling the gilded brass cool against my palm.

We let ourselves in, the faint smell of burnt cake lingering in the air. I led the way to Josh's study, my pulse quickening with anticipation. Inside, I could almost feel him there, like a ghost wrapped in memories. The walls began to close in, thick with secrets.

“What are we even looking for?” Noah whispered, half-excited, half-nervous.

I didn’t have an answer—only an instinct, a pull toward the unknown.

As I rifled through drawers, I found records of trust accounts, documents inscribed with our names. My heart raced. Clara had set this all up, but why hide it?

“Look at this,” Noah said, pulling out a folder filled with letters. The neat handwriting contrasted sharply with the chaos swirling in my mind.

I opened a letter addressed to Clara from a hospital. It detailed Elena’s care, her ongoing treatment, her desperate attempts to reach out. My fingers trembled.

Then I spotted another letter, this one scrawled in Josh's handwriting. “I’m scared,” it began. “I need to tell them the truth one day.”

Convergence of Thoughts

He knew. My heart sank as the implications washed over me. “He was waiting for us to turn eighteen to reveal everything.”

Noah sank into a chair, the weight of knowledge nearly overwhelming him. “And then he died first.” His voice was a muted whisper.

I picked up another letter, one from Elena, her own apology bleeding through the ink. She spoke of love, of regret, of wishing she could be with us. Everything Clara had stolen was now laid bare before us.

“She trusted you,” a memory echoed in my mind. Grandma’s voice lingered like a prayer.

With every word I read, the image of Clara morphed into something monstrous. She had taken everything—our mother, our childhood, and our right to know the truth. The betrayal cut deeper than I expected.

What would happen if Clara returned? Would she deny everything? What lengths would she go to protect her carefully constructed façade?

I felt a surge of adrenaline. “Let’s set a trap,” I said, turning to Noah. “We’ll force her to tell us the truth.”

The story continues…
