I Returned Home to Find My Wife Starving and My Family Deceiving Me, So I Laid a False Million‑Dollar Trap. Save

Homecoming Shock

My tires crunch on the gravel as the gold‑colored gate yields to the weight of my pickup, a pristine beast that glints like a trophy.

The house behind it looks staged for a catalog—two‑story columns, flawless siding, a marble fountain that never seemed to have a purpose.

I step out, the engine dying, and see Bethany kneeling at the outdoor washbasin. Her ribs jut through a shirt that hangs like a tombstone.

She’s bald, the scalp raw with thin scars, a jagged line where a razor must have torn through flesh.

She lifts her head, eyes widening, then drops them, hands covering the empty crown.

“Gavin?” she whispers, voice trembling like a candle in wind.

Before I can answer, Estelle glides onto the porch, silk draped over her shoulders, gold bracelets clinking with every motion.

“She did this to herself,” my mother says, smoothing a hand over my shoulder.

Fiona appears, clutching a designer handbag, her fingers a glittering mess of rings.

“Don’t make a scene, Gavin,” she snaps, eyes never leaving the polished countertop inside.

“She’s obsessed with losing weight,” Estelle adds, as if that explains the cuts on Bethany’s head.

I swallow the bile rising in my throat, the sight of the immaculate furniture doing nothing to mask the decay at my feet.

The Basement Whisper

I kneel beside Bethany, my fingers hovering over the pale bandage on her arm.

“What’s this?” I ask, voice low.

She flinches, the scar on her forearm flaring red, then pulls the sleeve tighter.

“I… I can’t talk now,” she mutters, her breath shallow.

She leans in, eyes darting to the darkened doorway that leads to the basement.

“There’s something… down there. They forced me to hide it.”

The words are a breath, a secret spilling into the cold air.

I press, “What are you hiding, Beth?”

She shakes her head, tears glistening on cheeks that have known too much hunger.

“You’ll see,” she whispers, voice cracking.

Before I can push further, Estelle snaps my arm, pulling me away from the washbasin.

“Stop digging, Gavin,” she hisses, eyes fierce.

“Or you’ll lose everything you’ve built.”
