I Returned Home to Find My Wife Broken, My Family Greedy, and My Own Revenge Just Beginning. Save

Confrontation in the Kitchen

I shoved the kitchen door open, the scent of fresh paint hitting my nose.

“Mom, Lila—what the hell is happening to Naomi?” I snapped, eyes flicking to the thin figure curled on the cracked tile.

She clutched a bandaged arm, the fabric torn at the seams, and whispered, “They’re watching us, Mark.”

My mother’s golden necklace glinted under the pendant light. “She’s just…unstable,” she said, voice smooth, eyes darting to the SUV through the window.

Lila, arms crossed, murmured, “She’s been hurting herself.”

I felt the ache in my throat, the sting of betrayal. “Unstable? This looks like a surgeon’s work.”

Naomi’s voice cracked. “Please…don’t—” she tried to say, but the bandage muffled the words.

“You’re hiding something, Mom.” I pressed, heart pounding.

She smiled thinly. “We’re protecting you. The war took enough from you.”

“Protecting me? By letting her bleed?” I raised my voice, feeling the weight of the $350,000 I’d just mentioned.

She flinched, but Lila’s eyes hardened. “You’ll understand when you’re older.”

Suddenly, the lights flickered, and the house shuddered.

Power Outage and the Hidden Door

“What the—” I muttered, stepping toward the tool shed where Naomi had been found.

The kitchen plunged into darkness; the only sound was the hum of the refrigerator dying.

Lila let out a strangled scream. “What’s that?” she shouted, backing away from the shed wall.

From behind the shed, a low grind echoed, and a hidden door burst open, splintering wood and rusted hinges.

A cold draft rushed out, scattering the scattered tools like a flock of startled birds.

Inside, the faint glow of emergency lights revealed shelves stacked with syringes, bandages, and a metal cabinet.

On the floor lay a thick ledger, pages fanned open, numbers and names scrawled in red ink.

My breath caught. “Lila—who’s that?” I whispered, reaching for the ledger, but the darkness swallowed the faint light.

“Mark—don’t—” Naomi’s voice trembled from the shadows, a thin thread of sound.

The house groaned, the power cut out completely, and a choking silence fell.

In total darkness, the hidden basement door yawned open, the ledger exposed, and I was left staring into the void.

Mark Descends Into the Basement

I eased the rusted ladder down, the metal groaning under my weight.

Cold air brushed my cheeks as I stepped onto the concrete floor, the faint scent of antiseptic mingling with damp earth.

My flashlight flickered, casting shaky beams across rows of metal shelves stacked with syringes, bandages, and jars of unidentifiable fluids.

At the far end, a stainless‑steel table stood under a single hanging bulb, its surface scarred and stained.

Naomi was there, her wrists bound to the cold metal with thick white tape that bit into her skin.

She stared at me with hollow eyes, a fresh surgical line running down the side of her abdomen, still raw and glistening with blood.

“Mark… they… they’ve been using my body,” she whispered, her voice ragged.

I knelt, the tape sticking to my fingers, and felt the tremor in her arm.
