I Returned Home to Find My Niece Trapped in the Doghouse While Something Dark Stood Watching Us

Into the Dark

“Hold on, I’m getting you out!” I hissed, thrusting my shoulder against the stubborn latch.

The metal groaned, then gave way, the door swinging inward on a squeal of old hinges.

Inside, the cramped doghouse exhaled a cold draft that whisked through the slats, making the pine scent bite.

Maisie’s tiny hands clutched the newborn, her fingers white as bone against the baby’s soft cheek.

“Mama, please!” the infant’s cry ripped through the stale air, sharper than the garden clock’s tick.

My eyes snapped to the far side of the yard, where a hulking silhouette loomed against the fence, its outline a dark smear.

It barely moved, just watched, as though the night itself had taken a shape.

“Victor?” I whispered, half expecting a name, half fearing the answer.

Maisie’s eyes darted to the shadow, then back to me, tears spilling down her cheeks.

“Don’t—” The baby’s gasp cut her off, a sudden, ragged inhalation that seemed to shake the wood.

I reached in, my palm finding the infant’s small, slick back, and lifted him gently out of the darkness.

The moment his shoulders rose, a soft click echoed from beneath the floorboards, louder than the garden’s ticking clock.

The Hidden Box

The sound startled us both; the floor shivered as if something long buried had awakened.

Along with the gasp, a hidden panel slid sideways, revealing a narrow opening in the pine planks.

From the gap glimmered the faintest metallic sheen, a dull glow that seemed to pulse with its own heartbeat.

My fingers brushed the edge of a rusted metal box, its surface pitted and cold, as if it had been waiting centuries.

“What is that?” Maisie’s voice trembled, barely audible over the infant’s whimper.

I could hear the faint clink of metal against metal, a sound that rang louder than the clock’s relentless tick.

It was as though the garden itself held its breath, the air thick with a metallic tang.

“Stay back,” I warned, though the box seemed to draw my own curiosity like a magnet.

The lid, bound with iron straps, shivered as if eager to be opened, the glow inside growing brighter.

My heart hammered, the shadow behind the fence still watching, its presence a silent accusation.

Just as I was about to lift the lid, a low hum rose from the box, resonating through the wood and into my bones.

The humming swelled, the glow deepening, hinting at something far more dangerous than a simple lock.

Maisie's Trembling Revelation

She clutched the baby tighter, the infant’s tiny fingers digging into her sleeve.

“It… it was there,” she whispered, voice shaking like a loose leaf.

My eyes darted to the rusted box, the metal clank still echoing in the night.

“Inside… there’s a lock of hair,” she said, pointing a trembling finger at a velvet pouch. “Great‑grandmother’s hair.”

She pulled the pouch out, the dark strands tangled, smelling faintly of lavender and old paper.

“And a locket,” she continued, lifting a tarnished piece coated in dried crimson. “She kept it blood‑stained, as if it’d been wounded.”

My heart thudded louder; the garden clock’s tick seemed to sync with my pulse.

“The stories… they said the hair and the locket together keep the house safe,” Maisie said, eyes wide.
