I Never Kept My Brother’s Promise Until a Poor Boy Showed Up at My Gala Wearing His Watch.

I Never Kept My Brother’s Promise Until a Poor Boy Showed Up at My Gala Wearing His Watch.

The Watch in the Marble Fountain

“Your watch… it’s just like my dad’s,” the boy whispered, eyes fixed on the silver band glinting on my wrist.

“Are you… are you really him?” a lady gasped, stepping back as the chandelier flickered.

I felt the marble cool beneath my shoes, the hum of strings muffling the gasp of the crowd.

Leo, thin as a reed, stared at the watch, fingers trembling.

“What’s your name?” I asked, voice shaking.

“Leo,” he said, and his eyes flickered with a determination older than his years.

“Your dad… his name?” I pressed, heart drumming in my throat.

“Scott,” he answered, and the name struck me like a physical blow.

I unclasped the watch, the metal sighing as it left my wrist.

“Take it,” I said, sliding it into his small hand. He clutched it as if it were a lifeline.

Leo’s thin arms wrapped around me, his breath hot against my ear.

“My father said to ask if you still keep your promise,” he whispered.

Memory surged: the hospital corridor, the whir of machines, Anna’s sobs, Scott’s last breath begging me to protect her.

He pulled back, eyes fierce despite bruises.

“He is alive,” Leo said, voice cracked.

“Where?” I asked, the music fading to a dull thud.

“Saint Matthew’s Rehabilitation Home. Men came for him this morning. Dad made me climb out a window,” he pointed past me, the marble fountain reflecting his resolve.

Confrontation with Charles

I turned, spotting my stepfather Charles standing beside my mother Eleanor, a glass of champagne trembling in his hand.

His smile was thin, a smirk that hinted at secrets.

“Adrian,” he said, voice smooth, “you always did have a flair for drama.”

I felt the weight of the crowd press in, but only his eyes mattered.

“You knew my brother was alive,” I blurted, breath shallow.

Charles’s eyebrows rose, a flicker of something behind his gaze.

“Scott? He was a reckless soul. He left a trail you couldn’t follow.”

Eleanor’s hand rested on his arm, her fingers white.

“You think you can solve it with a watch?” Charles chuckled, the sound echoing off crystal.

Before I could retort, a tall security guard in a crisp uniform stepped forward.

“Mr. Whitmore,” he said, voice hard, “you are under arrest for theft of a valuable heirloom.”

My skin crawled as his grip seized my jacket.

“What? I didn’t—” I tried to protest, but the guard’s eyes were unmoving.

He pulled me toward a darkened corridor, the ballroom lights flickering menacingly as the guard’s hand tightened.

Behind the Velvet

Security led me down a side corridor, the marble echoing under my boots like a funeral march.

The guard’s hand was cold on my shoulder, his eyes darting to the crowd I’d left behind.

“Sir, you’re coming with me. The heirloom you… took belongs to the Whitmore collection.”

I forced a smile, but inside my mind was a furnace of questions.
