The Unraveling

Before I could respond, Greg’s phone buzzed on the table. He picked it up, glanced at the screen, and his face plummeted. “What’s going on?”

“What?” I demanded, a knot of anxiety tightening in my gut.

“It’s just a message,” he said, looking pale.

“No, no more secrets.” My voice rose, filled with an urgency I couldn’t contain. “What does it say?”

“It’s… it’s from someone I didn’t expect to hear from,” he said slowly, and for the first time, the facade began to crack.

“What do you mean? Who is it?”

“Can we just—” he began, but Dennis interrupted, his temper finally spilling over.

“Enough with the games, Greg! Just say it.”

Everyone’s eyes turned to Greg, the silence wrapping around us like a thick blanket.

He stared at the screen, and the tension soared. “It’s… it’s an old friend. From college.”

“Old friend?” I echoed, my stomach twisting. “What old friend?”

But Greg just shook his head, biting his lip. The tension was palpable, and suddenly, I saw a flash of fear in his eyes, as if in that moment, everything might unravel.

“I can’t explain right now, just—”

“Just what?” I pressed, my heart racing. “No more secrets!”

With a sudden burst of anger, Greg hurled the phone across the table, and it landed with a shattering crash.

“You want to know about secrets? You want to hear how I’ve been feeling?” he shouted, and suddenly, I realized he was no longer speaking just to me. He was speaking to Sally, to everyone at that table. “You never ask, so what do you care?!”

But that was when Sally’s voice cut through the chaos, calm and steady. “Enough.”

The gravity in the room shifted again. We all looked at her, stunned. “We’re not having this fight.”

But Greg’s face twisted. “You think I’m the problem, don’t you?”

She met his gaze, unyielding. “You are the problem.”

The Revelation

The silence was shadowed by disbelief, as if we were standing on the brink of an unseen precipice. Greg’s face registered shock, and it was impossible to decipher his next move.

“You don’t get to act like you care while treating me like this,” Sally declared, her voice steady. “You think cake is the issue? It’s you.”

Every word landed like a stone, and I watched as a realization dawned on Greg. All those little jabs, all the comments that had worn her down; they coalesced into something dark and heavy in the air.

“I never meant—” he started, but Sally cut him off.

“You never meant to control me? To make me feel like I wasn’t good enough? You don’t get to backtrack now.”

Greg’s mouth opened and closed, the frustration warping into an emotion I wasn’t prepared for. Was it regret? Horror? He staggered back, leaning against the table as if the weight of truth threatened to knock him over.

“You should have told me,” he finally said, his voice strained. “I would have tried to help.”

“Help?” I echoed, my heart clenching. “You’ve been undermining her!”

The room felt charged. It was as if we were all holding our breath, suspended in time. Greg looked at Sally, and for a moment, the mask slipped. I saw a flicker of vulnerability, something raw.

“Just tell me what you want,” he pleaded, his voice small.

But the question hung heavy in the air, unanswered. I felt the ground shift beneath me, and suddenly, everything changed.
