I Never Expected My In‑Laws’ Dinner to Reveal a Dark Family Conspiracy That Threatened My Life

I Never Expected My In‑Laws’ Dinner to Reveal a Dark Family Conspiracy That Threatened My Life Save

The Recorder’s Secret

“Your blood sugar probably dropped,” Mason said, his smile thin as the cheap wine he’d poured.

I stared at the tiny device hidden in the seam of my purse, the red light blinking like a warning.

“Play it,” I demanded, voice shaking.

He hesitated, then tapped the recorder. A low, familiar whisper filled the kitchen.

“Natalie… don’t trust them.”

The voice was unmistakable—Victor’s, his tone strained, as if he’d been forced to speak.

My heart hammered. “Victor?” I whispered, the word tasting like rust.

“I… I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Mason said, eyes flickering for a split second before he forced a laugh.

His hands trembled as he reached for the recorder, then stopped, as if remembering something.

“I was just… checking the battery,” he muttered, the lie hanging in the air.

“You heard that,” I pressed, “you were there when it happened.”

He swallowed, his throat dry.

“I swear, Nat, I have no idea—”

He looked away, the fear in his eyes a silent confession.

“Why would Victor whisper my name?” I asked, the recorder humming a cold reminder.

He shook his head, the motion quick and desperate.

“Maybe it’s a joke,” he whispered, but his voice cracked.

“A joke that could kill me?” I snapped, feeling the room tilt.

He stared at the floor, his fingers curled into fists.

“Please, just—let’s not make a scene.”

I grabbed the recorder, its weight suddenly heavy with a secret I could no longer ignore.

Elaine’s Unexpected Return

Just as I slipped the recorder into my coat, the front door burst open.

Elaine stood in the doorway, hair still damp from the kitchen, eyes narrowed at the sight of me.

“Natalie, you need to leave right now,” she said, voice low, the authority in it unmistakable.

My palms slick, I clutched the recorder tighter.

“What’s going on, Elaine?” I asked, trying to keep my tone steady.

She glanced at the recorder on the floor, then back at me.

“That thing belongs here. It’s not yours.”

My breath hitched.

“You— you’re hiding something.”

Elaine’s face hardened.

“You’re not welcome here. Pack your things.”

I turned to gather my coat, shoes, the small bag of documents I’d brought.

Victor appeared behind her, his presence blocking the hallway.
