I Never Expected My Best Friend to Marry My Sister and Reveal the Secret That Changed Everything

I Never Expected My Best Friend to Marry My Sister and Reveal the Secret That Changed Everything Save

Grace’s Arrival

“Emily, they’re moving her now,” Caleb whispered, his voice almost swallowed by the beeping monitors.

Grace lay on the gurney, her belly a swollen moon, her eyes glazed with a mixture of fear and resignation.

The hallway smelled of antiseptic and stale coffee; a thin stream of fluorescent light flickered overhead.

“She’s thirty‑four weeks,” the surgeon said, his tone clinical, “the placenta is compromised. We’re prepared for everything.”

My breath hitched as the doors slammed shut behind the emergency team, their footsteps echoing like a drum.

Caleb stayed by my side, his hand gripping mine so hard my knuckles turned white.

“They’re talking about losing both,” a nurse murmured, her eyes darting to the monitor where the twins’ heartbeats fluttered irregularly.

I could feel the weight of every breath in the room, each one a reminder that this could be the end of Grace and the babies.

“Emily, I’m here,” Caleb said, his voice cracking, “just… stay with me.”

Time stretched, the fluorescent lights buzzing, while the doors to the operating theater closed, sealing us in a waiting darkness.

The Letter

When the surgeons finally emerged, their faces were ashen. “We’ve had to stop,” the lead doctor announced, “the risk was too great.”

Caleb’s shoulders drooped, and he lifted my arm gently, guiding me away from the sterile chaos.

We slipped into a quiet corridor, the walls lined with faded diplomas and a single, humming fluorescent bulb.

He stopped beside a locked door, his fingers trembling as he slipped a folded piece of paper into my palm.

“Sit down,” he urged, his voice barely a whisper, “you need to read this before anything else happens.”

I sank onto the cold metal bench, the paper crinkling under my grip.

Caleb’s eyes were hollow, his stare fixed on the floor tiles as if he were already adrift.

My heart hammered; the silence pressed against my ears.

I unfolded the note slowly, the paper softening under my fingertips.

The first line stared back at me, stark and cruel: “Emily, there’s something you need to know about the twins.”
