I Never Expected a Charity Gala to Unveil the Truth About My Worth as a Wife

A Dinner Proposal

The next morning, Richard ordered his assistant to hire a private investigator. He became convinced that his wife had been hiding an affair. For him, it was easier to imagine infidelity than to believe someone might value Margaret for a reason that had nothing to do with him.

Margaret arrived at the chosen restaurant, eager yet uncertain. The intimate setting was calming, and the dim light hid any potential tears that might dare to spill.

When she stepped inside, Jonathan stood to greet her, pulling out her chair. “Before we begin,” he said, “I want to apologize for last night. I realize my offer may have looked like another attempt to humiliate you.”

He placed a photograph on the table. It showed a woman in her early fifties with short hair and a gentle smile.

She felt a rush of warmth. But it quickly faded as she recognized the face. “Rebecca...?”

Jonathan nodded, his expression serious. “That’s my sister. She was lost to us a long time ago, and I believe you may hold the key to find her.”

Margaret’s heart raced. In a whirlwind of emotions, memories flooded back—Rebecca, the girl from the terminal. The one she had taken in for a night, given a meal, and sent away with a bus ticket. How did this man know?

“What do you mean I hold the key?”

“You cared for her, didn’t you? More than anyone else did?”

As she peered deeper into Jonathan’s gaze, the weight of her past suddenly shifted ominously. “I never knew her last name,” she admitted. “How do you?”

He paused, a hint of sadness in his eyes. “I’ve spent years searching. She’s been lost in the system, but your kindness—your address—could lead us back to her.”

Margaret felt the ground beneath her tremble. “You’re saying she’s...?”

“Yes. A woman who belongs to a world you left behind.”

But before she could respond, her phone buzzed in her purse. She hesitated, glancing at it. “It’s Richard.”

The Uneasy Truth

Margaret felt the tension winding tighter. She didn’t want to answer, but something urged her to pick it up.

“Where are you?” Richard’s voice was sharp, demanding. “You’re already late.”

“I’m—”

“You’d better come home now. I’ve got news.”

Her stomach knotted. “What kind of news?”

“Something you should probably hear in person. Just hurry.”

As she hung up, Jonathan watched her closely. “You should go.”

“What if I don’t?”

His eyes softened. “If you stay, you might find the truth. It’s your choice.”

But as she stepped out of the restaurant, the looming questions crushed down on her like heavy stones. What truth? And what had Richard discovered?

In the car, Margaret felt an icy knot of dread coiling tighter. The drive home felt longer than usual, each second stretching into a miniature eternity. She replayed her conversation with Jonathan. His sister needed help. Could Rebecca still be alive? How much had Richard uncovered?

When she finally reached home, Richard was waiting, pacing in the living room.

“What did he say?” Richard demanded, his voice taut.

“He’s looking for someone,” she replied cautiously. “Someone important.”

Richard’s jaw clenched. “You’re not leaving me for him, are you?”

“No, Richard! It’s not like that.”

“Then what’s going on?”

The confrontation ignited a fire in her, pushing back against the shadow of his jealousy. “You put me on that stage! You humiliated me!”

Richard stepped closer, his expression morphing into something darker. “This isn’t about me. It’s about you, Margaret. You’re hiding something.”

The story continues…
