I Married a Dying Stranger to Give Him Peace, but His Secret Changed Everything I Thought I Knew

I Married a Dying Stranger to Give Him Peace, but His Secret Changed Everything I Thought I Knew Save

Letters of a Forgotten Past

The weight of the green backpack felt almost symbolic as I unzipped it, the sound echoing in the quiet of the hospital corridor. Inside, I found a stack of old letters, photographs, and a leather-bound journal belonging to Bennett. Each item seemed imbued with the essence of a life I was only starting to comprehend.

As I pulled out a photograph, my breath caught. It was young Bennett, standing beside a boy—his son, I realized. The image exuded a warmth that was starkly different from the fragile man I had married. I turned it over, and a name, David, was scrawled on the back in the same hurried handwriting I’d seen on his letters.

“I never knew,” I whispered, my heart racing. “What else haven’t you told me?”

My fingers trembled as I sifted through the letters. The earlier ones were filled with hopeful notes from a father, filled with advice on music and chasing dreams, while the later ones turned painfully dark, revealing a tragedy that gnawed at Bennett’s soul. David had died, and the words reflected the deep, agonizing pain that Bennett had endured.

Each line dripped with regret, as I felt my own confusion shift into a cold grief. Questions piled in my mind: What had happened to David? How had Bennett carried this secret for so long?

Confronting the Truth

With the letters still clutched in my hands, I sought out Gerald. He was leaning against the wall, arms crossed, his eyes clouded with an unspoken burden. “Gerald,” I said, my voice shaking, “what happened to David?”

He hesitated, taking a deep breath as if preparing to unearth a hidden wound. “Bennett…” he started, then paused. “Bennett kept David’s death a secret to protect the life he built after Eleanor.”

My chest tightened as I tried to absorb his words. “Protect what? How could hiding that protect anyone?”

“He believed if he spoke about it,” Gerald continued, “he wouldn’t be able to move on. David was a musician, Camille. He was supposed to perform at a concert just days before he died. Bennett… he never forgave himself.”

The revelation struck me like a punch to the gut. A musician? David had dreams, and they were mercilessly snatched away. “Was Bennett a good father?” I asked, half-hoping for a reassuring answer.

Gerald's eyes darkened. “He pushed David too hard. Their relationship was strained, and after David’s death, Bennett isolated himself. He didn’t want reminders of his past. He thought he could build a new family with Eleanor.”

I staggered back, my head spinning. The letters had opened a floodgate, and now the dam had broken. “What else don’t I know?”

Gerald shifted uncomfortably, and I watched as he pulled out a crumpled concert ticket from his pocket. “This was found among Bennett’s things,” he said, handing it to me. My hands shook as I examined it. It was dated just days before David's death. A reminder of a life that could’ve been.

Confronting the Past

“I need to talk to you about David,” I said, my voice steady but my heart racing. Gerald’s expression shifted, uncertainty clouding his features.

“David?” he echoed, swallowing hard. “You know about him?”

I nodded, clutching the letters tightly. “What else didn’t he tell me?”

“Bennett kept David’s death a secret, Camille. He thought it would protect his new life… protect you.”

“Protect me? From what?” I felt the walls close in, the weight of revelation growing unbearable.
