I Found My Mother Homeless Under an Overpass and Learned My Brother Had Erased Her Life While I Was Away

Section 5

She remembered Vanessa’s perfume at the rehab center, something expensive and sweet that made Mom nauseous. She remembered Kyle standing by the door, scrolling his phone, saying, “Just sign, Ma, don’t make this dramatic.” She remembered the notary, a nervous woman with chipped red nail polish, asking once, “Is she fully aware?” and Vanessa laughing.

“She’s had surgery, not a lobotomy,” Vanessa had said.

Mom remembered the motel clerk giving her sympathetic looks. She remembered calling the bank, hearing that her accounts had been drained to pay unknown bills. I listened, horrified, as more pieces fell into place. Kyle’s charm had wrapped around her like a blanket, stealing not just her home but also pieces of her life.

“I thought he was looking out for me,” she whispered, tears gathering at her eyes. “I thought Vanessa was helping.”

My heart twisted; it was hard to comprehend the depth of betrayal. Words coursed through my mind—disbelief, shock. It felt like a storm was rising inside me.

Then Daniel rose, his energy shifting. “Claire, I need to make a call.”

He stepped into the next room, and I heard him dialing with an urgency that sent tingles down my spine. I kept my eyes on my mother; she needed me close.

“Do you think they’ll face consequences?” she asked, her voice trembling.

“They will,” I said, but uncertainty gripped my throat. What did that mean? Would Kyle retaliate? Would the law protect us?

Daniel returned, eyes focused with a steely resolve. “We’ll have a team at the house first thing in the morning.”

“What?” I barely heard my own voice rising. “You’re going to confront them?”

“No,” he said, “we’ll gather evidence first.”

My mind swirled as I tried to imagine what lay ahead. The fear of Kyle’s reaction lingered, but the need to protect my mother gripped me harder.

The next morning, we drove to the house together. I could hardly breathe as we approached the front door, which stood ajar. My stomach knotted. Daniel looked at me. “Stay behind me,” he said.

Inside, the air was sharp and silent. Dust motes danced in the sunlight filtering through the windows. “Kyle?” I called. No response.

Then I heard a rustling from the kitchen. My heart raced as we moved in that direction.

In the kitchen, I found Vanessa, her back turned to us. She was rummaging through a drawer, her movements frantic.

“We need to talk,” I said, and her body stiffened.

She turned slowly, her expression was a mask of feigned surprise. “What are you doing here?”
