I Fired My Employee for Being Absent, But What I Found Changed Everything

I Fired My Employee for Being Absent, But What I Found Changed Everything Save

Laura Demands the Address

Laura stared at her reflection, the blazer crisp against the glass.

"Three absences, three family emergencies," she muttered, voice low.

Patricia hovered, notebook trembling.

"Mrs. Mendoza, Carlos has always been reliable..."

Laura cut her off, arms snapping shut.

"I need facts, not fairy tales. Give me his address."

Patricia hesitated, eyes flicking to the monitor.

"It’s 847 Los Naranjos Street, San Miguel. Are you—"

"Are you going personally?" Laura asked, tone sharp.

"Yes," Patricia swallowed, "I’ll pull up the map."

The screen glowed, the coordinates flashing.

Laura’s jaw tightened, a cold smile curving.

"Good. I’ll see for myself what kind of emergencies he claims."

She grabbed her black leather purse, slipped the keys into her hand.

Patricia watched, a faint concern threading through her professional mask.

"Be careful, Mrs. Mendoza," she whispered, half to herself.

Laura turned, heels clicking on polished marble, the echo of authority trailing behind her.

The Door Opens to a Choking Infant

The Mercedes rumbled over cracked earth, mud splattering the side windows.

Gold towers disappeared, replaced by tangled vines and stray dogs barking in the distance.

Laura’s heels sank into the soft mud as she stepped out, the scent of damp soil filling her lungs.

The blue house stood, paint peeling like sun‑scorched skin.

She raised her hand, knocked once, twice— silence stretched.

Suddenly, a child's shriek and hurried footsteps echoed from inside.

The door cracked open, revealing Carlos, eyes hollow, clutching a wailing infant.

A second child clung to his leg, eyes wide with fear.

"Mrs… Mendoza…" Carlos whispered, voice trembling.

Laura’s stare was ice, but the baby's frantic cries pierced it.

The infant’s tiny hands clawed at the air, sudden coughing rattling the cramped doorway.
