She Dials Maya, Pleading for Help

My hands trembled as I pressed Maya’s number, the screen flashing my desperation.

“Maya, please— I can’t do this alone. He’s left, and I’m… I’m drowning with three newborns,” I whispered, the words choking on my throat.

There was a pause, then a soft laugh that felt more like a promise.

“I’m coming tonight,” Maya said, the firmness in her voice cutting through the haze of my panic.

She asked, “Do you need anyone else? I have a friend—her name is Claire, she’s a family‑law attorney.”

My heart thudded. “Yes. Anything. I can’t… I can’t face him alone.”

She hung up, and I heard the soft sigh of the babies in the next room, their tiny chests rising and falling.

Minutes later, I heard the familiar click of Maya’s key turning in the lock, the door swinging open with a purposeful stride.

She was carrying a massive folder, its leather cover worn, and a sleek black tote that Claire had slipped into her arm.

“We’re here,” Maya said, setting the folder down on the kitchen table with a thud that seemed louder than the clatter of dishes.

Claire stepped forward, her suit crisp, eyes scanning the room like a hawk.

“I’ve reviewed everything you sent,” she began, voice calm but edged with determination, “and we have options.”

I could feel the weight of the folder pressing into my palm, a physical embodiment of the salvation I’d been praying for.

“First,” Maya said, “we’ll get a restraining order. He can’t come near you or the babies.”

My breath hitched. The idea of him being legally barred felt like a shield I could finally hold.

“And we’ll file for emergency custody,” Claire added, pulling a stack of forms from her tote.

My mind raced, the fear of Ryan’s return clashing with a flicker of hope.

“He’ll be back tomorrow,” I whispered, the words trembling.

Maya placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder.

“Then we’ll make sure he can’t step through that door.”

We sat at the table, the folder open, the papers spread like a map to a new beginning.

Maya Bursts In With Legal Papers; Ryan’s Smile Vanishes

Hours later, the house smelled of coffee and hope, the kitchen table a battlefield of legal documents.

“You ready?” Maya asked, her voice steady as she lifted the thick folder.

She slammed it down, the leather thud echoing off the tiles.

Inside, a restraining order sat front and center, its bold lettering demanding distance.

“This is the first step,” Claire said, flipping the pages, “to keep you safe and protect the babies.”

I felt a surge of relief, the weight of Ryan’s absence lifting just a fraction.

Just then, the front door clicked open.

Ryan’s silhouette filled the doorway, his tan already glowing, a suitcase slung over his shoulder.

He paused, his eyes darting to the table.

“What’s all this?” he asked, voice casual, but the slightest tremor betrayed him.
