I Finally Learned the Truth My Mom Hid About Ethan, the Friend I Promised to Keep Forever

I Finally Learned the Truth My Mom Hid About Ethan, the Friend I Promised to Keep Forever Save

The Promise

At six, I promised Ethan we’d go to prom together.

We found each other over a shared hatred for raisins and a mutual love of dinosaur stickers.

He was the kid with Down syndrome who could quote baseball stats faster than anyone could recite the alphabet.

“Your drawings look like potatoes with arms,” he’d say, eyes bright, and I’d laugh because his honesty was a gift.

When Mrs. Alvarez announced she was getting married, the whole class buzzed about cake flavors.

Ethan stood up, pinkie out, and declared his future wedding would have chocolate cake and “no slow, boring songs.”

A snide boy muttered, “Who’s going to marry you? Nobody will.”

I didn’t understand the sting, but I saw his smile falter.

“That’s stupid,” I snapped. “Someone will love Ethan.”

He looked at me, serious, and asked, “Would you?”

“Maybe. But first we have to go to prom.”

“What’s prom?” he asked, curious.

“A dance when we’re almost grown‑ups.”

He hooked his pinkie with mine. “Promise?”

I wrapped my finger around his. “Promise.”

Years later, after school changes, family splits, and endless baseball lessons, Ethan still remembered every word.

When senior prom arrived at Willowcrest High, his suit‑and‑bow‑tie entrance felt like winning the World Series.

Mom opened the door, and for a heartbeat her smile vanished.

Midnight Warning

Mom’s stare lingered on Ethan, then she turned to me, eyes flickering like candlelight.

“I’m almost ready,” she said, voice flat, as she slipped a corsage into my palm.

She lingered in the hallway, then slipped inside my bedroom, closing the door behind her with a soft click.

“You can go to prom with Ethan tonight,” she began, “but only under one condition.”

I laughed, trying to shake the nervous tremor in my chest. “What? Home by midnight?”

She shook her head, hands trembling as they rested on the dresser.

“No.”

Her eyes darted to the window, then back to me, a storm gathering behind them.

“You need to hear the truth I should have told you years ago.”

My smile faded; the room seemed to shrink.

“What truth?” I asked, throat dry.

She pulled my hands into hers, squeezing gently, and the weight of her silence pressed down.

“About Ethan.”

She paused, breath shallow, as if choosing each word from a grave.

“And about me.”

The air grew cold, the flicker of the nightlight casting shadows that danced on the walls.
