Queens Arrival

She stepped off the plane into the humid rush of Queens, clutching Fiona’s hand like a lifeline.

The taxi screeched to a halt outside her cousin’s fourth‑floor walk‑up, the hallway already smelling of laundry detergent and stale pizza.

“This is it,” her cousin whispered, sliding a narrow mattress into the tiny room that barely fit a single nightstand.

Fiona’s stuffed rabbit thumped onto the cracked linoleum, the soft thuds the only sign of comfort in the cramped space.

Blaire dumped her two suitcases, the wheels clunking against the uneven floor, and then felt something slip from her carry‑on.

A sleek black card, matte finish, the name “Ethan Marlowe” embossed in silver.

Underneath, smaller type read: “Tech Magnate – Under FBI Investigation.”

She stared, heart thudding, the same pair of tired eyes she’d seen on the plane flickering back in her memory.

“Luca,” the card read, but the truth screamed louder.

She tucked the card into her pocket, the weight of it sudden and heavy, as Fiona giggled, oblivious, chasing a stray sunbeam across the wall.

Coffee Confrontation

She found the coffee shop a block away, a dim corner table humming with the low drone of espresso machines.

Luca sat across, his navy jacket replaced by a plain hoodie, the mask of witness protection barely hiding the familiar tired eyes.

“Blaire, I’m not who you think I am,” he said, voice low, as if the walls might be listening.

“Then what are you?” she asked, the USB drive he’d handed her earlier a cold square in her palm.

He explained briefly: he’d exposed a corporate fraud scheme, turned himself in, and entered witness protection to survive.

“I can’t go back,” he whispered, “but I need someone I can trust to hold onto this until I can retrieve it.”

She nodded, the drive humming against her thigh, the weight of his secret pressing against her skin.

Just then, a sleek black sedan screeched to a halt outside the shop’s glass door.

Two men in dark suits stepped out, eyes scanning, the air thickening with menace.

Before she could react, a deafening crack split the quiet.

A gunshot erupted outside the coffee shop, shattering the calm.

Luca’s head snapped back, his eyes wide, then his body crumpled onto the floor, lifeless.

In the chaos, the USB drive slipped from Blaire’s hand, vanishing into the fray as the door burst open, the gunmen flooding in.

Section 3 – The Return

I burst out of the coffee shop, the torn sliver of the USB clenched in my fist like a lifeline.

The street smelled of rain‑soaked trash and cheap pizza. I didn’t glance back at the black sedan that hissed away.

When I shoved the heavy suitcase into the cramped hallway of my cousin’s Queens apartment, my heart hammered against my ribs.

“Blaire, are you okay?” my cousin whispered, eyes wide.

I barely heard her. I unzipped the bag, peeled back the lining, and there it was—a glossy photograph tucked between a folded towel.

Luca—Ethan—smiling shoulder‑to‑shoulder with David, my ex‑husband, both in crisp suits, a stack of documents visible on the table behind them.

My breath hitched. The picture was dated two weeks ago, a day before the fraud went public.

“They were together,” I whispered, the words tasting like bile.

Fiona’s stuffed rabbit lay on the couch, its button eyes slightly askew.

Inside the rabbit’s soft belly, I found a tiny folded note: They’re watching.
