Frayed Connections

When I returned home, the air felt different—as if someone had stepped through my threshold, leaving behind traces of their presence. I could hardly breathe, my heart racing from the evening’s tension.

As I stood in my darkened kitchen, I thought about the photograph, the one that had vanished from my father’s footlocker. The memory of it clawed at me. There might be answers waiting in that neglected box.

My mother’s voice echoed in my head. “He’ll help you understand.” The words rang with implications I hadn’t grasped before. I wasn’t sure what Adrian wanted from me, but I was certain it had to do with my father.

Then, the images of my father’s colleagues floated before me. What did they know? And why was Adrian so involved?

Fingers trembling, I pulled out my phone to call my supervisor, Helen Cross. I explained the break-in, the box, the photograph.

“Be careful, Serena,” she warned, her voice a buzz of concern. “You’re dealing with serious people.”

“Serious people?”

“The kind who don’t play by the rules.” I felt the weight of her words. It was one thing to work in a bureaucratic environment; it was another to realize how deep the currents ran beneath the surface.

“We identified the woman from the restaurant,” she said, her voice grave.

“Who?”

“Lieutenant Naomi Bell. She filed a complaint against your father. Said he was keeping a private list of people looking into him.”

My stomach dropped. I had never known my father to be anything but an honorable man.

“What kind of list?” I asked, dread creeping in.

“Names of those who might challenge him.” Helen’s tone hinted at withheld knowledge, and I felt an urge to dig deeper.

“And Adrian?” I pressed.

Her silence spoke volumes. I knew there was more beneath it. Something I needed to uncover.
