I Discovered My Boss’s Secret and Now I’m Trapped in His Lie

I Discovered My Boss’s Secret and Now I’m Trapped in His Lie Save

Arrival

“Welcome to the estate, Claire,” Nathan said, his voice thin but warm as he guided me through the marble foyer.

His wheelchair glided past a portrait of a younger man, the angle of his gaze fixed on the towering windows that framed the lake.

Margaret Sterling stood near the grand staircase, her silver hair pinned back, eyes sharp. “You’ll find everything prepared for you,” she said, handing me a key that smelled of old wood.

Adrian, his younger brother, watched from the doorway, arms folded. “We run a tight ship here,” he warned, voice low. “Nathan’s condition—” he gestured to the wheelchair “—is the reason we have protocols.”

Vanessa, Adrian’s wife, entered with a tray of tea, setting it on a side table. “You’ll need to know the schedule,” she instructed, tapping a printed sheet. “Morning meds, afternoon therapy, nightly checks.”

I noted the silence that followed each instruction, the way each family member seemed to guard a piece of the house’s rhythm.

“My father was a surgeon,” Nathan whispered, “so I trust you with his hands.” I felt a tremor of responsibility settle in my chest.

That night, after dinner, Nathan led me to his private wing. The hallway was dim, the walls lined with soft, muted art. He stopped before his bedroom door.

The Whisper

“Lock the door,” Nathan murmured, his breath barely audible over the ticking of the antique clock.

I obeyed, the click of the bolt echoing in the quiet.

For a moment, nothing moved. Then, slowly, his foot shifted—a subtle flex of the ankle, a ripple of muscle that should have been dormant.

My heart hammered. “You… you can…?” I stammered, eyes wide.

He smiled faintly, the shadow of a secret passing over his features. “They think I’m bound,” he said, voice a mix of defiance and relief.

He lifted his leg fully, then placed his foot on the floor, testing balance. The wheelchair wobbled, then steadied as he transferred weight.

“I’ve been practicing,” he admitted, “just in case.”

Suddenly, the hallway lights flickered. A silhouette emerged from the darkness, tall and motionless, watching.

The figure stepped forward, the mask catching the weak light, revealing a masked intruder poised in the doorway, eyes locked on Nathan’s secret movement.

Adrian’s Ultimatum

“You’re meddling where you don’t belong,” Adrian said, his voice low as he closed the heavy oak door behind him.

I stared at the tablet he’d thrust into my hands, the screen flashing a news alert about Sterling Industries’ sudden drop.

“What are you doing with Nathan’s phone?” I asked, trying to keep my tone steady.

He smirked, eyes flickering to the corner where Nathan’s wheelchair sat idle.

“I’m making sure he can’t leak what he knows,” he whispered, tapping a finger to his temple. “You see, the company’s been cooking the books for years.”

A cold dread settled in my gut as he slid a folder across the desk.

Inside were printed emails, doctored spreadsheets, and a photo of Nathan shaking hands with a man I recognized as my father’s former business partner.

“If I expose this, the whole family falls,” Adrian warned, brandishing a thick envelope.
