The Confrontation

Ryan walked in the door, and his smile faltered as he took in the surroundings. I sat at the kitchen table, ring off, the folder still present. He shifted uncomfortably, his eyes darting around the room.

"Shaun did this. He convinced you. He's always hated me!”

I could only shake my head. “No, Shaun lifted furniture, Mom watched the babies. I made choices.”

His hands balled into fists. “You’re keeping them from me!”

“No, you’ve kept me from them! The schedule I proposed is inside. You wanted to outsource family to others, now you’ll see what it means to be present.”

He blinked, confusion morphing into anger. “The trip wasn’t the problem. It was the truth you finally spoke.”

That was the moment I realized: Ryan saw me as a vessel, not a partner.

In the following weeks, he visited the old house, stepping into a space that felt both foreign and familiar. Each visit was tinged with tension, the babies crawling through the flooring under his watch.

“Is there any chance for us?” he asked one evening, after I had tried to keep the atmosphere light.

“I regret how long I believed that keeping my family together required losing myself,” I said softly. “You took a vacation thinking I hadn’t earned one.”

And suddenly, it became clear to him. But I wasn’t going back to that dynamic.

Days turned into weeks, and the thought of Ryan’s persistent presence loomed. Yet, with each sunrise, I felt stronger, anchoring myself deeper into autonomy.

Shifting Dynamics

After a particularly fraught evening, I found solace in my mother’s presence. She offered words of encouragement, perhaps sensing my resolve. “You deserve happiness, Shannon. Don’t let fear hold you back.”

I nodded, but I had to confront the true grayness of my situation. Ryan was now a ghost haunting me, just as my father had been with his sudden death. My mind wandered to the secrets I kept buried, leaving me feeling vulnerable.

While he played with the babies, I found myself stealing glances at my phone, bracing for messages from him. I felt a strange mix of longing and resentment. A tug-of-war in my heart.

One afternoon, I found the courage to dig deeper, reaching into those memories that had brought me here—both good and bad. The ones I had long tucked away.

But those memories morphed into shadows, tethering me to Ryan’s actions, leaving me unable to fully let go. What about his vacation, those charades of normalcy he projected on social media?

As I fed Luna, I caught sight of my phone lighting up. It was Ryan again, a photo of him by the water, smiling wide with friends. How could he be so carefree? How could he act as if I wasn’t raising our children alone?

“Do you want me to say something?” Shaun asked, glancing at me cautiously.

“No, just let it be. I need to process.”

But could I? Would I? Each click and tap echoed deeper within me. What he was doing wasn’t just selfish; it was a clear manipulation of my mental state.
