I Caught My Neighbor Stealing My Power and Gave Her a Lesson She’ll Never Forget

I Caught My Neighbor Stealing My Power and Gave Her a Lesson She’ll Never Forget Save

Electricity Bill Shock

When the envelope arrived, the numbers screamed at me.

My usual $75 turned into $150, absurd for a house that has seen only a TV and a toaster since my husband passed.

I stared at the digits, feeling the weight of each extra cent like a cold hand on my shoulder.

“It must be a mistake,” I muttered, though my mind already catalogued every appliance.

That night, sleep fled as soon as the clock struck midnight.

A faint whirring rose outside my bedroom window, like a distant refrigerator humming.

I slipped from the covers, barefoot on the cold floor, and peered out.

There, under the dim glow of the streetlamp, Vanessa Cole was kneeling beside my garage.

Her sleek silver car sat inches from my driveway, a thick black cable snaking from the car’s port to the outdoor outlet by my garage door.

My heart hammered; my breath hitched as I stumbled onto the porch.

“Vanessa, what are you doing?” I shouted, voice shaking.

She glanced up, eyes glazed with nonchalance, and barely paused.

“Charging my car,” she replied, as if I’d asked why the sky was blue.

She shrugged, the cable still humming with unseen power.

“What’s the big deal?” she added, tone dripping with contempt.

I felt a flush of anger rise, hot and fierce.

“You’re charging it using MY electricity!”

Her smile was thin, almost mocking.

“Oh, come on, Eleanor. You live alone. How much electricity could you possibly use?” she sneered.

She tilted her head, as if I were the one being unreasonable.

“Don’t be so stingy. I have three kids, errands all day. You’re retired, you stay home.”

Memories of her borrowing my lawn mower, stealing my garden gnome, fluttered through my mind.

Each tiny theft piled up, a silent testament to her entitlement.

I clenched my fists, trying to keep my voice steady.

“You’ve doubled my bill. Stop using my outlet right now.”

She laughed, a hollow sound that bounced off the fence.

“It’s probably only a few dollars.”

Her eyes glittered with triumph, and she turned back to the car.

“Honestly, Eleanor, you’re so greedy.”

Something inside me clicked; I could not let this slide.

I stepped back inside, the door closing with a decisive click, and the gears of a different plan began to turn.

Vanessa’s Mockery and a Quiet Resolve

Morning light filtered through the curtains as I brewed tea, the bitter scent grounding me.

Vanessa’s words echoed, each jab a reminder of the injustice.

Instead of confronting her again with anger, I decided to be clever.

“There has to be a way,” I whispered to the empty kitchen, watching steam rise from the cup.
