The Unexpected Message

As the officers continued their questioning, I felt my phone buzz again. Caught in the whirlwind of adrenaline, I barely registered it. Diego's family was becoming increasingly restless, their discomfort palpable in the air. I could sense the undertow of their whispered conversations behind my back—calculating, strategizing.

“No more lies,” I urged Diego, who now looked like a deer caught in headlights. “You don’t have to protect them. They aren’t protecting you.”

“You’ll regret this,” he muttered, but I held his gaze, steady. I couldn’t let him drown me with fear and shame. As the officers wrapped up their interviews, I noticed that the message had popped up again.

It was repeating: “Valerie, you need to know the truth about your in-laws.”

The hairs on my arms stood up; a chill skated down my spine. Who was this? I needed to see it. Just as I started to lift my phone, the officer’s voice cut through the tension.

“Ma’am, are you aware of any previous incidents of violence?”

The question pulled me back. I felt the weight of Diego’s family watching closely, their eyes darting between the two of us. It was their chance to deflect blame, and I couldn’t let them seize it. “No,” I stated firmly, “not until tonight.”

“We’ll need to make a report,” the officer said, looking at Diego with a critical eye. “Let’s just take this one step at a time.”

My heart pounded, not just from adrenaline but from anticipation. The message still lingered on my screen, begging me to look, to understand. I would discover its contents soon enough, but for now, I had to focus on the moment.

The clinking of glasses and murmurs from the dining room faded into background noise as the officer asked, “Where do you see yourself going from here?”

“Anywhere but here,” I replied, my voice unwavering. “I want the truth.”

An Unearthed Secret

With the police on the scene, it felt like I stood at the edge of a dark and tangled forest, each tree hiding a secret that had been lurking just beneath the surface. Diego’s family remained frozen, their expressions masking a whirlwind of emotions. Was it fear? Regret? Or something darker?

The officers began to wrap up, but I felt the urgency to explore that message I had dismissed earlier. As they took notes, I slipped my phone into my lap and glanced at the screen.

“Valerie, you need to know the truth about your in-laws.”

My heart raced as I opened the text. It was from an old acquaintance, someone I hadn’t spoken to in years. I felt a knot tighten in my stomach. “What truth?” I whispered to myself, my fingers trembling.

The officer caught my eye. “Everything alright?”

“Yes, I just… need a moment,” I said absently. I could feel Diego’s eyes on me, sensing the shift, the tension creeping into the room as their façade began to crack.

“There are layers to this family that you don’t understand,” the message continued. “Their past is filled with darkness. It’s not just financial control; it’s something deeper.”

“Valerie?” Diego’s voice broke through my concentration. “What are you reading?”

“Just—” I hesitated, weighing my words. “It’s about your family.”

His face paled. “What do you mean?”

“Just something a friend reminded me of.” The moment felt charged, the air thick with unspoken truths. I had to find out what he was hiding.
