I Built His Dreams While He Built Lies, But Now I’m Ready to Reclaim Everything He’s Taken From Me

I Built His Dreams While He Built Lies, But Now I’m Ready to Reclaim Everything He’s Taken From Me Save

Gathering Evidence

My phone rang incessantly, but I couldn't tear my gaze away from that wedding photo. Malcolm stood there in a cream suit, his smile wider than I’d ever seen, marrying Desiree. The betrayal sliced through me like a knife, and I needed proof. I grabbed a notebook, flipping it open to a blank page. I would document everything.

“What are you doing?” Sarah's voice jolted me back to reality. She leaned against my office doorframe, concern etched on her face.

“I’m going to expose him,” I whispered, determination hardening my voice. “He’s taken everything from me.”

“Let’s start with Desiree,” Sarah suggested, her eyes narrowing with practicality.

Hours later, we sat at my kitchen table, surrounded by stacks of papers and my laptop. The glow of the screen illuminated our faces. “She works in your building, right?” I asked, feeling the weight of every betrayal. “We need to find out how long this has been going on.”

As we sifted through details, each revelation chipped away at my heart. I never realized how many times Malcolm had used my trust against me—charging personal expenses to our joint account, lying about business meetings that were nothing more than excuses to meet her.

“Look at this,” Sarah said, pointing at an old email. “Can you believe he asked for a loan to pay for a romantic getaway to Cabo? He told you it was for a business trip!”

The anger surged in me, but so did the heartbreak. “Why was I so blind?” I muttered, the realization crushing me. I could feel tears prick at my eyes but focused on the task at hand. I needed to be strong.

A Confrontation

“You knew, didn’t you?” My voice shook as I stood in front of my mother-in-law, the words pouring out like venom. “You all knew about the wedding.”

Her expression was unreadable. “It was for happiness, dear,” she replied, those words slicing through my already fragile composure. “You have to understand—”

“Understand?” I interrupted, my voice rising. “You’re defending him? He betrayed me, and you think this brings happiness?” I took a breath, trying to maintain control. “What about my happiness?”

“Drama doesn’t help,” she said, brushing off my pain like dust from her shoulder. “This is family.”

“Family?” I shot back. “You mean the family that helped him hide his lies?” Tears steamed down my cheeks as I felt the sting of betrayal echoing back through time. “You all pretended like nothing was wrong while I built my life on a lie.”

Tension hung thick in the air as my mother-in-law crossed her arms. “I did what was best for everyone,” she insisted, her tone defensive.

Before I could respond, the sound of my phone ringing jolted me again. I glanced at the screen, my heart lurching. It was Malcolm. I couldn’t face him—not now. He was supposed to be on his honeymoon, not intruding into my space like this.

“He’s home,” I whispered, the panic swirling around me as I realized we were out of time. “He’ll find out.”

As I ignored his frantic calls, I could imagine his confusion turning to desperation. The mansion was no longer his; it was sealed off, just like my heart. And now, I was determined to take full control of my life.

Section 3

“I can’t believe he would stoop this low,” Sarah said, scrolling through her phone. She glanced up at me, her expression a mix of pity and fury. “Desiree has been posting pictures with him for months. This was a setup.”

I swallowed hard, the taste of bile in my throat. “How could I have been so blind?”

“It wasn't just love, was it? There’s money involved. We need to dig deeper.”

Every word felt like a dagger, twisting in my chest. I had thought we were partners, building a life together. But this? This was treachery. The thought of a prenup twisted my stomach even more. “If there’s a prenup, I could lose everything.”

“Let me look into it,” Sarah said, her voice steady. “I’ll find out what I can. You just focus on what you need to say in court.”

I nodded, but my mind raced. I had always been the breadwinner, the foundation of our life. How could he justify leaving me with nothing? The anger simmered beneath my skin, my heart heavy with betrayal and confusion. I had to fight. I had to reclaim what was mine.

Section 4

The waiting room smelled of polished wood and anxiety. I could feel the tension radiating off the other couples, each lost in their own emotional battles. I stared at my hands, trembling slightly, when Malcolm walked in. He was accompanied by Desiree, her hand resting possessively on his arm.

The sight of them together ignited something primal within me. I clenched my fists, fighting the urge to scream. “How can he be so arrogant?” I whispered to Sarah, who sat beside me, her brows furrowed in concern.

“Just breathe,” she said softly. “You’ve got this.”

But my heart raced, my thoughts alternating between revenge and despair. “I can’t believe he’s just waltzing in here like he hasn’t ruined my life.”

“He thinks he can win,” Sarah replied, her voice low. “Let’s show him otherwise.”

Just then, the bailiff called our names. My heart pounded in my ears as I stood, my eyes darting to the hidden stack of legal papers in my lap. When I shifted nervously, a corner of an envelope caught my attention. I pulled it out and unfolded it, my breath catching in my throat as I read the words: “Inheritance Trust.”

My mind raced. A trust? I hadn’t known. Did Malcolm really think he could hide this from me? And where did the money come from? Just as the judge called us in, the realization hit me like a freight train.

I had to confront him. This was more than I could have ever imagined.

But I didn’t have the chance. The court proceedings were about to begin, and I was left with this shocking revelation simmering in my mind. What did this trust mean? As I moved forward into the courtroom, my heart sank under the weight of what I had to lose. Malcolm had turned my entire life upside down, and I was about to find out just how deep his deception ran.

Presenting the Case

The courtroom feels like a cage as I stand before the judge, clutching the letter like it’s a lifeline. My heart pounds against my ribs, each beat echoing doubt in my ears. “Your Honor,” I begin, my voice shaking slightly, “this letter proves that Malcolm had premeditated plans to deceive me.”

I look up from the document to see Malcolm’s smirk—he doesn’t think I stand a chance. With each piece of evidence I present, including records of my investments in his failed ventures, I feel the scales tipping. Sarah sits in the gallery, her supportive gaze fueling my determination. I can’t let him get away with this.

“He manipulated my trust for his advantage. I deserve justice!”

Malcolm’s lawyer rises, smooth and confident. “Your Honor,” he says, “this letter is merely a distraction. My client’s financial decisions were made jointly with his wife.” The words hang in the air like a toxic cloud. My mind races, grasping for a counter, but doubt creeps in. Could he twist this into something that implicates me?

The tension in the room thickens, and I can almost hear the clock ticking down our final moments. My breath catches as the judge leans back, deep in thought. Silence envelops us, each second stretching on, taunting me with uncertainty.

The Ruling

“The court finds in favor of the petitioner, granting a divorce.” The judge’s voice pierces the silence, and my heart races with hope. But the next words hit me like a slap. “However, due to the prenup that Mrs. Carter was unaware of, she will be losing a substantial portion of her assets.”

What? The ground shifts beneath me, and the world blurs around the edges. I clutch the table for support, my mind reeling. I fought so hard for this moment, only to be left empty-handed. As I step out of the courtroom, my heart heavy with defeat, a vibration in my pocket pulls me back to reality.

It’s a text from an unknown number. My hands tremble as I swipe to open it. “Malcolm set up a trust with Desiree before your marriage. That inheritance was always meant for her.” The words sink in like stones, dragging me deeper into despair. Everything Malcolm built was a façade, a trap designed to ensnare me while he secured his future with Desiree’s help.

“Had he been planning this all along?”

My breath hitches, and I feel hollow. All those years of loyalty, trust, love—nothing but a prelude to this betrayal. My fight isn't over; it has only just begun. The thought ignites a bitter flame within me, fueled by the knowledge that they took everything, and I refuse to let it end like this. I will reclaim what is mine.
