How a Rainy Night Made Me Realize My Employee Wasn’t Invisible, But a Mother in Desperate Need
Unearthed Secrets
On the third day, as Matteo returned home late again, a message lit up his phone. A number he didn’t recognise. He opened it hesitantly: “You shouldn’t be helping her.”
A chill spread through him. The text continued: “She’s not who you think she is.”
His mind raced. What did that mean? Did someone know about Elina’s situation? Why did it feel so threatening?
Matteo confronted her as soon as he arrived home. “Elina, I received a message. Someone is… warning me.”
Her eyes widened, panic flashing like lightning. “What did it say?”
He hesitated, unsure whether to reveal the full truth. “That I shouldn’t be helping you.”
“Why would they say that?” she asked, voice trembling.
“I don’t know. I thought… maybe they’re mistaken?”
“Mistaken?” She shook her head vigorously, hair damp around her face. “Matteo, you don’t understand. I’m not just struggling. I’m trying to protect them.”
“Protect who?”
“The babies.” She bit her lip, looking from him to the sleeping children in the crib. “Their mother… she had a history. I didn’t want them to fall into the system.”
Matteo’s heart raced. “What do you mean?”
Before Elina could speak further, her phone buzzed, shattering the moment. Eyes darting to the screen, she froze. The expression on her face twisted into something Matteo had never seen: horror.
“I have to go,” she whispered, trembling.
“Go? Where?”
“I… I can’t tell you.”
And just like that, she snatched up her phone and bolted out the door, rain mixing with her footsteps before he could stop her.
Matteo felt a mix of dread and confusion wash over him. What was happening? Why did she leave? A rush of adrenaline propelled him to the door, and he followed her into the storm.
