Claire’s hands tightened around Robert’s tie as she took a breath, hesitating. “He left you more than just a house, Greta,” she began. “He left you the truth.”

It felt absurd, hearing her say that. My hands trembled as I crossed my arms. “You’re standing here with his tie, telling me he left me the truth? The same man who turned our children against me?”

She opened her purse and pulled out three papers, one by one. The second showed that the rest of Robert's business money had been assigned to me. Everything he had promised me was laid bare.

"He wanted every dollar returned to you," Claire said.

I felt a rush of confusion and anger mixed with disbelief. “Did he think money could replace the years of my life he stole?”

“He meant to pay you back for the years he didn’t honor,” she replied, her voice low. “He wanted to make sure you were taken care of.”

It was dizzying, this new perspective, but I shook my head. “This doesn’t excuse what he did.”

“No, but it’s not just about the money, Greta. He realized he might run out of time. He didn’t want you to suffer.”

“And by lying—”

“He thought he was protecting you.”

My heart beat faster. The truth felt slippery, like ice beneath my feet. I glanced at the tie. Had he worn it when he married Claire? When he told her he loved her? Did that mean anything?

I looked at Claire, and for a moment, I almost felt sorry for her, standing there with his memory—this woman who had somehow occupied the space I should have held until the end.

Unraveling the Lies

Days turned into weeks, and the weight of Robert’s death sat heavy on my chest. I had been preparing for a world without him, but instead, I was left with unanswered questions that clawed at my insides.

When I finally gathered the courage to confront my children, I invited them over for dinner. My anxiety flared as they entered, their expressions a blend of wariness and expectation.

"What is she doing here?"

Hanna glared at Claire, who had joined our gathering. I could feel the tension pulsing in the air.

“Mom, are you fighting with Claire now?” she asked, glancing between us.

“I brought her,” I said, my voice trembling, “because I need you to hear the truth.”

And so I spoke. I laid everything bare—the lies, the marriage, the betrayal. I told them how Robert had manipulated my love and turned them against me. Pain twisted their faces as I spoke, but I needed them to see.

The conversation gave way to silence, the weight of my words settling around the room.

“I think we should believe Claire,” Steven finally said, doubt threading through his voice. “She loved Dad.”

“And you think I didn’t?”

“You could have fought harder for him,” Hanna replied, her voice breaking. “You just let him walk away.”

“I was pushed away!”

The words echoed, and I looked at Claire. “What do you want?”
