A Hidden Truth

“Love is complicated, kid.” He shrugged. “Your mother was caught between the two of us. I let my pride get the better of me.”

“She died in that fire,” I said, the words tasting bitter. “She didn't even mention you. I thought you didn’t care.”

“It wasn’t that simple.” His eyes flared with emotion. “Walter was the one who got her involved in that mess.”

“What are you saying?” I pressed, gripping the edge of the bed tightly, just to have something to hold onto.

“He was up to something,” Marcus replied, his voice dropping to a near whisper. “Naomi knew. She didn’t want to be a part of it.”

My heart raced. “Part of what?”

“I’ll tell you everything,” he said, taking a step closer, “but I need you to trust me.”

A rush of anger surged inside me, pushing against the fragile surface of my composure. “Why would I trust you? You’re nothing but a ghost.”

“Because I know things you don’t, and I can prove it.” He gestured toward the birth certificate. “That document holds the key.”

I glanced back at Mr. Walter, who remained eerily still. What if there was a truth buried beneath the surface, hidden not only from me but from him as well?

“What’s in that box, Marcus?” I asked, my breath hitching with a mixture of dread and curiosity.

“Secrets that could ruin him. But they could answer so many questions for you.”

My hands felt clammy, fear inching through my veins. “Just tell me the truth. And then I’ll decide.”

“Your mother…” He hesitated, swallowing hard. “She didn’t die like you were told.”

“How then?” I asked, nearly breathless.
