The night before I was supposed to give birth, I overheard my husband offering my doctor $500,000 to make sure I never left the delivery room alive. I was eight months and three weeks pregnant, lying perfectly still in my hospital bed while the man I had loved for seven years whispered, “Make it look like a complication. Infect her during delivery, let her die, and the money is yours.”
For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe. Then Dr. Adrian Cole answered quietly from the sitting room of my private hospital suite. “Five hundred thousand?” Nathan chuckled. “You’ll get half tomorrow. The rest after the funeral.” My fingers tightened around the blanket. Nathan believed I was unconscious because he had secretly slipped a sedative into my tea. What he didn’t know was that I had seen him crush the pill. The moment he stepped away, I poured the entire cup down the bathroom sink.
Through the partially open bedroom door, I could see him standing beside the doctor in the expensive charcoal suit I had bought him for our anniversary. “Once Audrey is gone,” Nathan said, “everything transfers without a problem.” Everything. My grandmother had left me a commercial property company worth nearly twelve million dollars. For years, Nathan had insisted that my money meant nothing to him. Apparently, twelve million dollars had finally changed his mind.
Then he said something that made the betrayal even worse. “Bianca is already five months pregnant. I’m tired of hiding her.” Bianca. His so-called marketing consultant. The same woman who had smiled at me across the table at Christmas. The same woman who had touched my pregnant stomach only a month earlier and said, “You must be so excited.” I wanted to scream. I wanted to throw open the door and confront both of them. Instead, I slowly reached beneath my pillow and pressed the record button on my phone.
Chapter 2: The Plan
Tears streamed down my face as I listened to the two men calmly discuss how they planned to make my death look like nothing more than a tragic childbirth complication. Nathan’s voice was cold and calculating. “Make sure it’s believable. No one can suspect a thing.” Dr. Cole nodded, his eyes betraying a hint of hesitation. “It will be done,” he said, though his tone lacked the confidence I expected from a professional.
My heart pounded as I thought about the lives at stake. My child, who I had nurtured for so long, and myself, the woman who had trusted her husband with her life. I couldn’t let this happen. I had to act, but I needed a plan. I had already forwarded the recording to my attorney, my private cloud account, and my brother, Lucas. Now, I needed to buy time.
I feigned a groan, pretending to stir from my supposed sedation. Nathan and Dr. Cole quickly moved to my bedside. “Audrey, are you awake?” Nathan asked, his voice feigning concern. I opened my eyes, pretending to be disoriented. “Where am I?” I asked, my voice weak. “You’re in the hospital, honey. You’re going to have the baby soon,” Nathan replied, his smile forced.
Dr. Cole checked my vitals, his fingers lingering a bit too long. “Everything looks good, Audrey. We’ll keep a close eye on you.” I nodded, my mind racing. I knew I had to get out of there, but I couldn’t risk alarming Nathan or Dr. Cole. I needed to play this carefully.
Chapter 3: The Escape
As the night wore on, I pretended to drift in and out of sleep. Nathan and Dr. Cole stayed in the room, their conversation growing more hushed. I could hear the tension in their voices, the urgency in their plans. I knew I had to act soon. My brother, Lucas, would be on his way, but I couldn’t wait for him. I had to get out of the hospital and find a safe place.
When Nathan and Dr. Cole finally left the room to get some rest, I waited a few minutes before slowly getting out of bed. My body ached, but I pushed through the pain. I quietly made my way to the bathroom, where I found a hospital gown and a pair of slippers. I slipped them on and carefully opened the door, peering into the hallway.
The corridor was quiet, the night shift nurses busy at the nurses’ station. I took a deep breath and began to walk, my heart pounding in my chest. I had to get to the elevator without being seen. As I approached the nurses’ station, one of the nurses looked up. “Audrey, where are you going?” she asked, her eyes filled with concern.
I forced a smile. “I just need some air. I’ll be right back.” She hesitated but nodded, allowing me to continue. I reached the elevator and pressed the button, praying it would arrive quickly. The doors opened, and I stepped inside, my hands shaking as I pressed the button for the ground floor.
Chapter 4: The Confrontation
The elevator doors opened, and I stepped out into the main lobby. My heart raced as I looked around, trying to find a way out of the hospital without being noticed. I spotted a side exit and hurried toward it, my mind focused on one thing: getting to safety. As I pushed open the door, a cool breeze hit my face, and I took a deep breath, feeling a surge of hope.
I walked quickly to the parking lot, my eyes scanning the area for any sign of Nathan or Dr. Cole. I spotted a cab parked near the entrance and approached it, my heart pounding. “Please, I need to get out of here,” I said, my voice trembling. The driver nodded and opened the door for me. I climbed in, giving him the address of a nearby hotel where I knew I would be safe.
As the cab pulled away from the hospital, I pulled out my phone and called Lucas. “Lucas, it’s me. I’m at the hospital. Nathan and Dr. Cole are trying to kill me. I’m on my way to the hotel. Please, you have to help me.” Lucas’s voice was steady, but I could hear the concern in his tone. “I’m on my way, Audrey. Stay safe. I’ll be there soon.”
When I arrived at the hotel, I checked in and went straight to my room. I locked the door and sat on the bed, my mind racing with thoughts of what to do next. I knew I had to confront Nathan and expose his plan, but I needed to do it carefully. I couldn’t let him hurt me or my unborn child.
Chapter 5: The Twist
The next morning, Lucas arrived at the hotel, his face etched with worry. “Are you okay, Audrey?” he asked, pulling me into a tight embrace. I nodded, tears streaming down my face. “I’m scared, Lucas. I don’t know what to do.” He held me tighter, his voice firm. “We’ll figure it out. We have to.”
We spent the day going over the recording, planning our next move. Lucas contacted our attorney, who advised us to gather as much evidence as possible before confronting Nathan. We needed to be prepared for anything. As the evening approached, we decided it was time to act. We returned to the hospital, where Nathan and Dr. Cole were waiting.
“Nathan, we need to talk,” I said, my voice steady. Nathan’s eyes widened in surprise. “Audrey, what are you doing here? You should be resting.” I held up my phone, pressing play on the recording. “I heard everything, Nathan. Your plan to kill me and take my money. How could you do this to me?”
Nathan’s face turned pale, and he glanced nervously at Dr. Cole. “This is a misunderstanding, Audrey. We can work this out.” I shook my head. “No, Nathan. This is over. You and Dr. Cole are under arrest for attempted murder and conspiracy.” Lucas stepped forward, his expression grim. “The police are on their way. You won’t get away with this.”
Nathan’s eyes filled with fear as he realized the gravity of his actions. “Bianca, she’s pregnant too. She’s carrying my child,” he pleaded. I felt a pang of sorrow for the child, but my resolve remained firm. “That child deserves better than you, Nathan. You’ve lost everything.”
The police arrived, and Nathan and Dr. Cole were taken into custody. As I watched them being led away, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. I had protected myself and my unborn child. The betrayal had been devastating, but I had found the strength to fight back. With Lucas by my side, I knew I could face whatever challenges lay ahead.
The next day, as I lay in my hospital bed, I felt a gentle kick from within. My child, a symbol of hope and resilience, reminded me that even in the darkest moments, there is always a glimmer of light. I would raise this child with love and strength, and I would never let anyone hurt us again.
