My Fiancé Was Declared Dead Before Our Wedding, But I Saw Him Alive at Another Wedding

My Fiancé Was Declared Dead Before Our Wedding, But I Saw Him Alive at Another Wedding

My fiancé died before our wedding — three months later, his mother saw me at another wedding and immediately tried to hide.

A Ghost in the Garden

Adrian and I were supposed to get married that summer. We’d booked the Willow Creek Inn, a charming place with rose gardens and a rustic barn. I’d chosen my dress, a simple A-line silk that made me feel like a princess. We’d argued over the cake flavor – vanilla bean with raspberry filling versus chocolate with salted caramel – and laughed about how ridiculous we were being. Then, six weeks before the wedding, Adrian was killed in a car accident. A drunk driver. The crash was so bad the medical examiner recommended a closed casket.

I stood beside his mother, Colleen, at the funeral, holding her hand while they lowered Adrian into the ground. The weight of her grief felt like it was crushing me, too. I thought that was the worst day of my life. Three months later, I learned I was wrong. I’m a florist. After Adrian died, I couldn’t even look at a bridal bouquet without thinking about the one I’d chosen for myself. But eventually, bills needed paying. So three months after his funeral, I agreed to start taking wedding jobs again.

That morning, another florist called in sick, begging me to cover a wedding at the Blackwood Estate. I agreed. A few hours later, arranging centerpieces at a venue I’d never worked at, I saw a familiar woman near the entrance. Colleen. I almost called out. Then she saw me. Her face changed, a flicker of something…panic, maybe? She turned away and disappeared down a side hallway. “Colleen?” I called, my voice trembling. She stopped. “Meredith?” Her voice was strained. “What are you doing here?” “I’m working. I’m the florist.” Before she could answer, a coordinator hurried over. “Mrs. Parker, the groom needs his mother.” Adrian had an older brother, Julian. This must be his wedding, I thought. Then I noticed the corsage on Colleen’s wrist – I’d made it myself that morning. For the groom’s mother. And then…I heard her voice.

The Groom's Deception

A few minutes later, I found myself near the groom’s suite, drawn by an unbearable curiosity. Colleen looked around nervously before slipping inside. I crept closer, my heart hammering against my ribs. Through the narrow opening of the slightly ajar door, I heard Colleen’s voice. “You need to hurry. The ceremony starts in twenty minutes.” A man answered. It wasn't Julian's voice. Something about the timbre, the cadence…it sent a jolt of ice through my veins. Then the man stepped into view. My hand flew to my mouth, stifling a scream. Adrian. Alive. And wearing the same navy suit he’d bought for our wedding, the one we’d picked out together after weeks of agonizing over fabric and fit.
