Ingredients

Brownie Base

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup all‑purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder

Cheesecake Swirl

  • 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tsp lemon zest (optional)

Toppings & Finishing

  • 1/4 cup semi‑sweet chocolate chips
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

Assembling & Baking

  1. Layer the brownie base. Spread the chocolate batter evenly in the prepared pan, smoothing the top with an offset spatula. The surface should be level for an even bake.
  2. Add the cheesecake swirl. Drop spoonfuls of the cream‑cheese mixture over the brownie layer. Using a knife or skewer, gently swirl the two batters together, creating a marbled effect. Be careful not to over‑mix; you want distinct ribbons.
  3. Top with chocolate chips. Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips over the surface. They will melt slightly, creating pockets of extra chocolate as the brownies bake.
  4. Bake. Place the pan in the middle rack and bake for 30‑35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the edge comes out with a few moist crumbs. The center should still be slightly soft—this is the hallmark of a fudgy brownie.
  5. Cool & dust. Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan (about 20 minutes), then lift them out using the parchment overhang. Dust generously with powdered sugar before cutting into 12 squares.
