Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all‑purpose flour
  • ⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt (plus a pinch for topping)

Wet Ingredients

  • ⅔ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ¾ cup brown sugar, packed
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Mix‑Ins & Topping

  • 1 ½ cups semi‑sweet chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup chopped toasted walnuts (optional)

Instructions

Mixing Wet Ingredients & Combining

  1. Blend butter and sugars. In a large mixing bowl, pour the melted butter over the brown and granulated sugars. Whisk until the mixture is glossy and the sugars begin to dissolve—about 1 minute. This creates a smooth base that will carry flavor throughout the cookie.
  2. Add eggs and vanilla. Crack the eggs into the butter‑sugar mixture, add vanilla, and beat until fully incorporated. The eggs act as emulsifiers, binding the dry ingredients to the wet and giving the cookie its tender crumb.
  3. Incorporate dry mix. Gradually fold the sifted dry ingredients into the wet mixture using a rubber spatula. Stir just until no streaks of flour remain; over‑mixing would develop gluten and make the cookies tough.
  4. Stir in chocolate chips (and nuts). Gently fold in the semi‑sweet chocolate chips and optional walnuts. The chips should be evenly distributed so every bite delivers a burst of melty chocolate.
