I Still Remember the Day I Saw My Brother in a Red Suit and Our Father’s Secret Was Finally Revealed

I Still Remember the Day I Saw My Brother in a Red Suit and Our Father’s Secret Was Finally Revealed Save

Eric’s Secret Suit

“What are you wearing?” I hissed, tugging him behind the pews.

He stared at me, eyes rimmed with grief, the red jacket catching the dim stained‑glass light.

“Not now, Sarah,” he whispered, voice trembling.

“Dad would’ve hated this,” I snapped, feeling the weight of every black‑clad mourner pressing in around us.

He shook his head. “No. He wouldn’t.”

The service began, the organ’s mournful chords cutting through the chapel’s stale air.

Later, at the cemetery, Mr. Lawson stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the bright jacket.

“Where did you get that suit?” he demanded, his voice low, eyes narrowed.

“It was in Dad’s closet,” Eric said, his tone flat.

I felt my stomach drop. I had sorted through every garment in our father’s wardrobe after the funeral. No red suit.

“Which closet?” Lawson asked, stepping closer.

Eric glanced at the study’s heavy oak door, the one we’d never used.

“The one downstairs,” he said. “There’s a narrow door behind the bookcase. I found it looking for his military papers.”

He described the hidden space: three garment bags, two black suits, and the red one with a note pinned inside, his name scrawled in our father’s precise hand.

My mind raced, the cold stone of the cemetery underfoot grounding me as the truth slipped through the cracks of our family’s past.

The Letter in the Lining

Mr. Lawson pulled us aside, his fingers already itching at the jacket’s seam.

He traced a faint, hand‑stitched line along the inner lining, the fabric whispering under his touch.

“Your father was... meticulous,” he muttered, eyes flicking to the red thread.

He produced a tiny pair of scissors from his briefcase, the metal glinting in the pale sunlight.

With a swift cut, the seam fell open, and the jacket’s interior revealed a sealed envelope and a thick packet of documents.

Everyone gasped; the wind rustled the dead leaves, carrying the sound across the rows of fresh graves.

Lawson lifted the envelope, his hands steady despite the tremor in his voice.

“He promised it would only reach you if you found the red suit and chose to wear it,” he announced, eyes locked on Eric.

He slid the envelope across the grass to Eric, who stared at it as if it might burst into flame.

“Your father spent the last year of his life preparing this,” Lawson continued, his tone a mix of reverence and dread.
