My Sister Tried to Ruin My Graduation, But I Had One Last Surprise for Her

My Sister Tried to Ruin My Graduation, But I Had One Last Surprise for Her Save

The Lab's Whispered Secrets

I slipped into the dimly lit computer lab just as the midnight humidity settled over the campus, the hum of servers like distant thunder.

Maya was already there, her monitor casting a pale glow on her face, eyes flickering between lines of code.

"You really think they forged the whole thing?" I asked, voice low.

She tapped a keystroke, and a trail of encrypted packets spilled across the screen.

"Look," she said, pointing, "the timestamps line up with the night you were summoned. The hash—it's been altered."

I felt the weight of the envelope from graduation still warm in my pocket.

"So where does it lead?" I pressed.

She leaned in, her breath fogging the glass. "The IP address resolves to a remote server in Utah. But it's a proxy—there's a second hop."

My mind raced. The shadow of Stephanie's betrayal loomed, but this was something else, something bigger.

"Can you trace the second hop?" I asked, hands trembling.

Maya's fingers flew. A map of nodes lit up, a single line pulsing toward a corporate subnet.

"Got it," she whispered, a hint of triumph. "It's a tech firm—your sister's place of work."

The realization hit hard. I swallowed, feeling the old ache of being the responsible one.

"Who's the point of contact?" I demanded.

Her screen displayed a name: Ryan Patel, junior network engineer.

My throat tightened. I knew Stephanie's coworker, a quiet guy who always seemed to disappear after lunch.

"We need him," I said, resolve hardening.

Confrontation in the Dark

We found Ryan in the same lab, a coffee mug clutched in his hand, his eyes narrowing as we approached.

"You have something we need," Maya said, voice steady.

Ryan stared at the screen, then at us, his expression shifting to something darker.

"You think you can waltz in here and…?" he sneered, his fingers twitching near his belt.

"We know about the forged evidence," I said, showing him a printout of the IP trace.

His face paled, then hardened. "I was hired," he confessed, voice low, "by a rival to plant false data. They wanted to take down the scholarship program."

He swallowed, eyes darting. "I didn't mean for it to hurt anyone."

Maya stepped forward, her own voice icy. "Why involve my sister?"

Ryan's shoulders slumped. "She was the easiest target. I never imagined you'd dig this deep."

Suddenly, the lab lights flickered, the fluorescent tubes sputtering.

Before we could react, a metallic click echoed.

Ryan's hand darted to his belt, a glint catching the brief flash.

He pulled a gun, barrel aimed squarely at us.

"Stay back," he hissed, breath ragged.

The room went black as the power cut, and a deafening gunshot rang through the darkness.

Police Arrive and the Truth Unfolds

The downtown precinct squad cars screeched to a halt outside the university lab, lights flashing against the night.
