I’m Standing in My Father’s Rose Garden, Ready to Expose the Betrayal He Anticipated Before the Will Is Read

I’m Standing in My Father’s Rose Garden, Ready to Expose the Betrayal He Anticipated Before the Will Is Read Save

White Roses and Unspoken Threats

“Good morning, Tabitha.” My voice cut through the crisp air like a blade.

She paused, one perfectly manicured toe curled on the stone path, eyes flashing a practiced smile.

“Kyle thought it would be easier if we settled everything today instead of making tomorrow uncomfortable.”

I tightened my grip on the pruning shears, feeling the familiar weight of my father's garden against my palm.

“There’s nothing to settle.” I watched a white petal drift to the ground, recalling the day Colonel Everett Collins planted these roses on my wedding—honor, loyalty, new beginnings.

“Oh, I think there is.” Her tone hardened as she glanced over the estate, already envisioning her furniture in the ballroom.

My thoughts flickered to Kyle, my brother, who had been sending her updates about the will’s nuances, feeding her confidence.

“My father respected loyalty,” I said, voice low. “Sleeping with another woman while married to his daughter wasn’t exactly the kind of loyalty he admired.”

She tightened her jaw. “That happened years ago. Your father forgave him.”

Perhaps he had, or perhaps he had been waiting. My mind raced back to Arlington, the 21 volleys, the echo of duty still ringing in my ears.

“My father didn’t leave this estate to Calvin,” I whispered, a thin smile breaking through my composure. “We’ll see.”

She smiled, thin as the edge of a knife. “Kyle’s been very helpful, hasn’t he?”

I glanced at the rose bushes, their white heads trembling in the breeze, and felt the weight of a secret that had been planted long before this day.

Kyle’s Arrival and the Hidden Clause

The gravel crunched under Kyle’s boots as he stepped onto the front lawn, his military bearing unmistakable.

“Paige, I’m sorry,” he said, eyes flicking toward the house before settling on me. “I came to make things right.”

I clenched my fists around the shears, the metal biting into my palm. “You left me to watch my world crumble. Why now?”

He hesitated, then lowered his voice. “There’s a clause my dad drew up—one that could wipe you out if the garden is ever destroyed.”

My heart hammered. The roses were more than flowers; they were a safeguard, a trigger.

Before I could answer, a shadow detached from the doorway. Calvin leaned against the frame, his smile thin, his gaze locked on Kyle.

“You’re just in time,” he murmured. “The will’s hidden clause activates if the estate’s heart is broken.”

Tabitha emerged from the house, her heels clicking like a metronome. “So we clear the roses, we get everything.”

Kyle’s eyes flicked to her, a flicker of agreement, then back to me. “I can help you—if we all agree to the terms.”

My mind raced, cataloguing every lie, every promise broken. The garden, the clause, the betrayal—all converging.

“If you think you can strip me of any claim, you’re wrong,” I snapped, the edge in my voice sharpening.

Tabitha laughed, low and cold. “Then let’s begin.” She raised her hand toward the gardener, who lingered nearby, clutching a shears set.

“Start clearing the roses now,” she commanded.

At her words, the ancient stone statues flared to life, a low hum resonating through the roots.

Suddenly, the estate’s security system surged, alarms blaring, heavy doors slamming shut. The mansion fell into a suffocating darkness, every exit sealed.
