I Finally Escaped My Husband’s Household Slavery, Took My Mother and Son, and Walked Into My Secret Mansion. Save

Confrontation in the Living Room

"Your mother is used to serving people," Marjorie sneered, her grapes clinking against the plastic bowl.

I felt the cold air bite my cheeks as I stepped forward, the weight of my bag slamming against my thigh.

"Enough," I said, voice steadier than I felt. "Evelyn is not your maid."

Derek looked up, his eyes flickering between annoyance and something else, then he muttered, "Fine, Maya."

He rose, dragging his tablet with him, and followed me into the kitchen.

Evelyn's hands trembled around the pot; the shawl around Noah's back was tight, his small cries muffled.

“Noah, let me help,” I whispered, kneeling beside her.

She loosened the knot, and the child slipped into my arms, his damp hair sticking to his forehead.

We gathered the few bags she had managed to pack—clothes, a worn blanket, her medication bottle—while Derek lingered, eyes darting to the television.

“You’re coming with us,” I told him, and his shoulders sagged as he finally turned away.

The Mansion Across the Street

We burst through the front gate, the wind scattering fallen leaves around our hurried steps.

The mansion loomed, its marble façade shimmering under the late afternoon sun, windows dark like empty eyes.

Evelyn clutched her cardigan tighter, her breath shallow, while Noah clung to my hand, eyes wide with curiosity.

Inside, grand arches rose to a vaulted ceiling; chandeliers hung like frozen constellations, dust motes dancing in the shafts of light.

The house was silent, save for the echo of our footsteps on polished marble.

We explored room after room—opulent dining hall, a library with towering shelves, a ballroom with a cracked piano.

In the master bedroom, behind a folded tapestry, I felt a faint click.

My fingers brushed a concealed panel; it gave way, revealing a small steel safe embedded in the wall.

There, on a silver tray, lay a tarnished key, its teeth worn but unmistakable.

I inserted it, heart hammering, and turned. The lock surrendered with a soft sigh.

Inside, stacks of documents fluttered as I lifted them—legal filings, property deeds, and a photo of Derek shaking hands with the mansion’s original owner.

My breath caught as the papers linked Derek’s family to the illegal seizure of my father’s company.

Police Arrive and Accusations Fly

“She stole my son!” Derek shouted, his voice cracking through the cramped hallway.

Marjorie clutched the TV remote like a weapon, eyes wide with panic.

“Call the police, Maya!” the voice on the intercom trembled, a thin veil over the anger.

Maya lifted her phone, thumb hovering over the dial. The screen lit up with an incoming text.
