Confrontation in the Kitchen

I stood in the doorway, the scent of rosemary and burnt butter curling around me, and forced my trembling voice into steadier steel.

"Aaron, what did you just say on the phone?" I demanded, my eyes locked on his calm profile as he turned from the stove.

He brushed a stray strand from his forehead, the smile that usually warmed my mornings now a thin line.

"Maya, it's not what you think," he began, but I cut him off.

"Don't. I heard you say she's had no clue all these years. Who is 'she?' What is 'tonight'?" My breath hitched, the sound of the ticking clock louder than his heart.

He swallowed, the spoon clinking against the ceramic bowl like a warning bell.

"Listen, I've been… handling things. I didn't want to worry you. I thought I could protect us." The words tasted like ash.

I stepped closer, the floorboards creaking under the weight of fifteen years.

"Protect us? By lying to me? By making me think a ring would appear on a table that never came?" My hands clenched around the edge of the counter.

He opened his mouth, then closed it, eyes flicking to the window where the night sky pressed against the glass.

"There's a reason I didn't give you a ring," he whispered, the tone suddenly urgent, like a man caught in a storm.

I felt the kitchen spin, the light from the candles guttering as if it sensed the tension.

"Then tell me why you hired a man named Marcus to bring a folder tonight," I said, my voice low, heart thudding against my ribs.

Aarons eyes flickered, a brief flash of panic before he steadied his gaze.

"Marcus was supposed to bring the documents. He knows everything… about the estate, about my… our future." He swallowed hard.

My mouth went dry, the taste of copper rising.

"And why does the estate attorney, Mr. Reyes, now stand at our door?" I asked, the question hanging like a blade.

Revelation of the Missing Marcus

Aaron's shoulders tensed, his jaw tightening as if bracing for a blow.

"I told Marcus to meet us here at eight. He was to hand over the folder, the one with the final papers." He glanced at the dark hallway beyond the kitchen.

A sudden knock rang, sharp and deliberate, echoing through the tiled floor.

The door swung open, and a man in a crisp gray suit stepped into the room, his briefcase clicking against his leg.

My pulse surged; the figure's eyes were cold, measuring, the metal nameplate on his lapel catching the candlelight: M. REYES.

"Good evening, Ms. Vance," he said, voice smooth, the kind that could melt steel.

Aaron's composure cracked for the first time, a flicker of fear crossing his face like a shadow.

"Mr. Reyes?" I managed, the name tasting bitter.

He placed his briefcase on the kitchen island, the lid opening to reveal a thick stack of papers, the top page bearing a familiar seal.

"I was told you'd be here tonight with the folder," he continued, eyes never leaving mine.

Aaron took a step back, his hand hovering near the counter, the weight of his secret pressing down.

"You… you weren't supposed to…" he stammered, voice ragged.

Mr. Reyes tilted his head, a thin smile curving his lips.

"It seems there's been a misunderstanding, Aaron." He gestured to the folder, as if inviting me to see what had been hidden.

My breath caught, the realization slicing through the room like a knife.

Aaron's face turned, eyes widening as the truth settled like a stone—Marcus was not there, and the man he had expected to manipulate was standing in the doorway, ready to expose everything.

Reading the Documents

I shoved Aaron onto the cracked kitchen chair, my hands trembling around the folder he’d left on the counter.
