Confrontation in the Office

My hand trembled around the edge of his mahogany desk as I stepped into the room he called “the engine.”

“You signed the divorce papers, and now you think a photograph can erase everything?” I shouted, the words ricocheting off the glass wall of printouts.

He stared at me, eyes cold enough to shatter glass, his smile a thin line.

“You think I’m the one who built that wall?” he asked, voice flat.

“You built a wall of lies. Twins with my best friend, a secret bank trail, an offshore account that funded a lie.”

“You know nothing.” He rose, the plush chair creaking beneath his weight.

From the corner, his mother sat like a statue, a black recorder blinking red. She didn’t speak, but her eyes followed every flicker of my rage.

I could feel the hum of the recorder, the weight of every breath captured for someone else.

“Why?” I demanded, voice breaking, “why betray me with the woman who held my hand at the parking garage?”

He swallowed, the silence stretching, then finally:

“Because I needed a family you could never give me.”

The recorder clicked louder, as if savoring the confession.

Revealing the Offshore Account

He pulled a thin folder from the desk drawer, flipping it open to a glossy page stamped with a foreign seal.

“This is where the money went,” he said, pointing to a list of numbers that looked like a code, “an offshore account in the Cayman Islands. It paid for the clinic, the doctors, the newborns.”

The words slammed into me, each syllable a brick.

I flipped the folder over, eyes catching a faint watermark—a bank statement I’d never seen.

The header read my own loan reference, the same $410,000 I’d poured into his company.

“You used my money to fund… what? My own betrayal?” I whispered, throat raw.

His mother’s phone buzzed on the side table, a tiny vibration that seemed deafening.

She lifted the device, eyes narrowing as a message scrolled across the screen.

“If you keep digging, I will ruin your career,” the text warned, the sender’s name hidden behind a block of asterisks.

The room seemed to shrink, the recorder’s red light pulsing in rhythm with my racing heart.

Just then, the ringtone of his phone cut through the tension—a shrill wail that sounded unmistakably like distant police sirens approaching.

Section 3 – The Clinic Revelation

I pushed the revolving door open, the sterile scent of antiseptic hitting me like a slap.

“You’re late,” the doctor said, his voice a rasp from too‑many night shifts.

He stared at the clipboard, eyes hollow.
