Jamie’s Call

“You are not going to believe WHAT just happened to Ethan!” Jamie’s voice cracked through my phone.

My heart leapt; I could hear the hiss of traffic behind her, the clatter of a coffee shop’s espresso machine.

“What? Jamie, what’s wrong?” I whispered, clutching the receiver as if it might save me from the panic already blooming.

She inhaled sharply, the sound ragged, “He’s at the airport. The police just… they arrested him.”

I could taste the stale coffee on my tongue, feel the cold metal of my kitchen sink as I stared at the countertop.

“Arrested? For what?” My voice trembled, the words catching on the memory of his empty promises.

Jamie’s sigh was a gust of wind across a grave. “He was caught trying to smuggle a suitcase. They found… white powder, like a kilo, hidden in a duffel. He said it was a ‘business trip’ to Miami.”

The room seemed to shrink. I could hear the ticking of the wall clock, each second a hammer on my ribs.

“You’re kidding,” I laughed, a sound that cracked like dry leaves.

“I wish I was,” she said, the words a knife. “They’ve got him in custody. I just… I had to tell you. I’m so sorry.”

My mind raced back to the night he left, his cheap excuse about a coworker’s Instagram bikini photos, the way he’d slipped away without a word.

“What does this have to do with the surrogacy money?” I asked, anger bubbling like surf on a rock.

Jamie hesitated, then whispered, “I think… I think it’s all connected.”

I slammed the phone down, the plastic thudding against the table, and bolted for the door, my shoes squeaking on the hardwood.

My hands shook as I pulled on my coat, the smell of winter rain seeping through the cracked window.

“I need to see him,” I whispered to the empty hallway, “to see what he really is.”

At the Police Station

The precinct smelled of burnt coffee and stale paperwork. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead as I pushed through the metal doors.

Detective Alvarez stood by a wall of taped evidence, his badge glinting against his dark shirt.

“You’re the one who called?” he asked, voice low, eyes narrowed.

“I’m—” I swallowed, “I’m her ex‑wife. Ethan’s wife. I need to know why he’s here.”

He gestured toward a small table where a laptop flickered with grainy footage.

“We’ve been tracking a shipment linked to a major cartel. The suitcase he tried to board was flagged by customs.”

“He was… smuggling drugs?” My throat tightened, the words tasting metallic.

Alvarez nodded, his expression hardening. “Yes. And there’s more.” He leaned closer, his breath smelling faintly of tobacco.

“Your coworker, the one with the bikini Instagram—she’s not just a model.” He paused, letting the weight of his statement settle.

“She’s an undercover federal agent. We fed her the intel, set a trap at Miami International.”

My mind reeled; I could see the glossy photos, the sun‑kissed beaches, now twisted into a badge.

“You’re saying he was part of a drug‑laundering ring?” I asked, the words spilling out like a flood.

Alvarez’s eyes flicked to the laptop, where a grainy security video began to play.

In the footage, a man in a navy jacket—Ethan—stumbled toward a suitcase, his hand shaking as he shoved a white powdery substance inside.

The camera caught the moment his fingers brushed the interior, the powder spilling like snow onto the metal floor.

Just before the security guard shouted, “Stop! Police!” the video cut to black.

Alvarez turned his stare to me, the silence hanging like a blade.

Unexpected Reunion in the Waiting Room

When the police doors swung shut behind me, the fluorescent hum of the interrogation wing felt like a morgue.

I slipped onto the plastic chair, clutching the edge as my mind replayed Ethan’s smug exit.
