Homecoming

I pulled into the driveway of the spotless colonial, the sun slanting off the polished white columns.

Six hours of highway stretched behind me, each mile a promise to my mother’s seventy‑eighth birthday.

Chloe opened the door, her hand glinting with a gold bangle, a smile rehearsed and brittle.

“You should’ve called first,” she said, the words sliding off her tongue like polished traffic.

“Your mother gets confused,” she added, her eyes flicking to the car as if timing my arrival mattered.

Inside, the house felt larger than it ought to be, every surface dusted, every curtain drawn against the bright afternoon.

I stepped into the hallway, hearing the faint clink of her jewelry and the muffled thud of a child’s toy in the far room.

The scent of fresh soap and lemon cleaner hung in the air, but underneath lay a tension I could taste.

“Mom?” I whispered, stepping toward the living room where a frail silhouette lingered.

The Bathroom Reveal

My mother stood by the fire, a thick wool coat draped over her shoulders despite the warm air.

She was thinner than I remembered, the lines on her face deeper, the light catching the pale skin of her hands.

When I reached for the coat, she clutched it tighter, voice trembling.

“Please… don’t take off my coat,” she begged, eyes darting toward the closed bathroom door.

I felt a chill as I noticed the faint, dark bruises peeking from beneath the fabric, the red rope marks circling her wrists.

“Who did this to you?” I whispered, the words catching in my throat.

She shook her head, lips parting in a sound that was more a sob than a sentence.

Without a word, I turned the knob, locked the bathroom door, and turned the shower on, the water roaring to drown whatever secrets fled from the tiles.

As the steam swirled, a small recorder slipped from my pocket onto the floor, its red light blinking faintly.

Chloe burst in, eyes flashing, the kitchen knife glinting in her hand.

“Give me that tape,” she hissed, lunging toward the recorder, the knife whispering against the wood.

Mom’s voice rose in a desperate scream, the water masking a plea that hung in the heavy air.

Section 3 – The Truth Captured

Mom’s voice trembled as she whispered, “Julian… he ties me, he forces me to sign papers that aren’t mine.”

I edged closer, the recorder hidden beneath my coat lapel humming to life.

“What about the phone?” she asked, tears glistening, “He smashed it when I tried to call for help.”

I could hear the faint rush of the shower masking our words, the steam curling like a veil.

“Those rope marks,” she said, tracing the crimson circles on her wrists, “they’re his… his punishment for my ‘mood swings.’”

She paused, breath hitching, “He says I’m a burden, that I’m dangerous to myself.”

My hand tightened around the recorder; each confession was a brick in the dam I was building.

When Mom’s sobs faded, I slipped the device onto the tiled floor, its red light blinking a silent promise.

“I’m sorry, Mom,” I whispered, “I’ll get you out of this.”

Without looking back, I slipped out of the bathroom, the shower’s roar still covering our voices.
