I Never Expected My Daughter’s Joyful Reveal to Uncover a Dangerous Secret Hidden Beneath the Cake

I Never Expected My Daughter’s Joyful Reveal to Uncover a Dangerous Secret Hidden Beneath the Cake Save

Confrontation in the Garden

“Mark, what the hell did you do?” I demanded, my voice trembling as the baker’s words replayed in my mind.

He swallowed, eyes darting to Lauren’s shaking shoulders.

“It wasn’t… it wasn’t supposed to be like this,” he whispered.

Lauren clutched the frosting‑smudged edge of her dress, tears still streaming.

“You hired her, didn’t you?” I pressed, feeling the heat rise in my cheeks.

Mark’s jaw tightened; the woman in the bakery footage was a blur, but his face was unmistakable.

“She… she helped me. I thought… I thought we could control the outcome,” he stammered.

The baker shifted, her apron rustling.

“She demanded a sealed envelope. They paid us $500 to swap it, then she asked me to hide something under the board.”

My heart hammered.

“What did she want hidden?” I asked, voice barely a breath.

She glanced at the cake, then at me.

“A vial. A photo. Something she said would ‘prove’ something.”

Mark’s face went ashen.

“I didn’t know she’d… I didn’t know what she’d do,” he said, hand shaking.

Lauren’s stare was vacant, as if the joy of motherhood had evaporated.

“We need to find her now,” I said, stepping toward the gate.

Chase Through the Backyard

Mark lunged after the woman, his feet kicking up dust.

I followed, heart thudding, the garden lights flickering like watchful eyes.

The woman darted past the rose trellis, her coat flaring.

“Stop!” I shouted, my voice raw.

She slipped through the side gate, the latch screeching.

Mark reached the gate first, his fingers grasping the metal bar.

She vaulted over the fence, landing on the patio steps.

“Come on, you’re not getting away,” Mark cursed.

I sprinted after her, the grass brushing my calves.

She turned at the back door, pulling it open with a swift motion.

The house loomed, darkness swallowing the hallway beyond.

She vanished inside, the door swinging shut behind her.

Mark slammed his palm against the wood, breath ragged.

“She’s inside!” I yelled, feeling the pulse in my ears.

From the hallway a faint rustle echoed, then silence.

On the floor where she’d slipped a note, a torn piece of paper fluttered.

I knelt, fingers trembling, and unfolded the jagged edge.

Ink bled across the page, spelling a single line:
