I Thought I’d Finally Watch His Fall, But I’m the One Who’s About to Lose Everything

I Thought I’d Finally Watch His Fall, But I’m the One Who’s About to Lose Everything Save

Mockery in the Midnight Ballroom

“Is that really Marcus?” I whispered, half‑laughing, half‑shivering at the sight.

He glided past the crystal chandeliers, a tray of sparkling drinks balanced on his wrist, the silverware glinting like a weapon.

The guests leaned in, their murmurs rising like a low tide – “Did you see his badge?” “He looks… lost.”

I let my voice rise, “Oh, poor Marcus, serving us peasants now.”

He paused, caught my eye, and offered a polite smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

Inside, a cold knot tightened. He’s still the same man, just… hidden.

Someone near the bar scoffed, “A mogul turned waiter? That’s a fall I’d pay to watch.”

He lifted a glass, the liquid catching the light, and placed it before a trembling young couple.

“Just for tonight,” he said, voice smooth, as if the words were a password.

I felt the room pulse, each chuckle feeding my triumph, while Marcus’s gaze swept the crowd, cataloguing every whispered judgment.

The scent of expensive perfume mingled with the faint aroma of polished wood, grounding the absurdity of the scene.

My heart raced, convinced I’d finally see him crumble under our eyes.

The Manager’s Intrusion

Suddenly, the massive doors burst open, the polished wood splintering under the force of a hurried stride.

A senior manager – crisp navy suit, badge glinting – stormed in, eyes locked on Marcus.

“Sir,” he barked, voice cutting through the murmurs like a blade.

The ballroom fell into a stunned hush, the clinking of crystal silenced.

“The board members are ready,” he announced, his tone flat, unyielding.

My smug grin faltered; the confidence that had buoyed me now felt fragile, like glass threatening to shatter.

Marcus checked his watch, his fingers brushing the edge of the tray, the subtle movement a silent tick of time.

“Already?” I heard myself whisper, the words tasting sour on my tongue.

He lifted his head, eyes narrowing, and replied, “Coming.”

The manager’s mouth twitched, a flicker of something unreadable crossing his face.

“He’s spent the last month undercover in every department of this hotel,” the manager continued, his voice echoing off the gilded walls.

Gasps rippled through the crowd, the whispers turning into a collective, breath‑held gasp.

My mind scrambled – the mockery I’d cultivated now collided with a revelation I hadn’t anticipated.

Everyone stared, waiting for the next move, as the senior manager’s words hung heavy in the air, demanding Marcus meet the board for his final decision, shocking everyone.

Revealing the Suit

Marcus slipped his hands into the inner pockets of the jacket, the thin fabric rustling against the polished wood.

He tugged the white coat away, and the room seemed to inhale.

Underneath, a charcoal‑gray suit fit him like a second skin, the cut sharp enough to cut through the murmurs.

“You’ve seen me in a uniform,” he said, voice even, “but not the layers beneath.”
