Boarding the Flight

I stepped onto the jet bridge, the vinyl floor humming beneath my shoes, and handed the ticket stub to the attendant.

“Good afternoon, ma'am,” she said, her smile polished as any airline brochure. “May I see your boarding pass?”

I handed it over, the plastic card feeling like a flimsy shield. My two kids clutched my hands—Emma’s curls bobbing, Jonah’s little fingers squeezing my thumb.

“Seats 12A and 12B, right this way,” the attendant called, gesturing toward the row of reclining seats.

We slipped past the bustling cabin crew, their chatter a muted soundtrack to the roar of jet engines. I inhaled the sterile scent of recycled air, the faint hint of lemon cleaner.

Emma whispered, “Do we have to go far?”

Jonah answered, “Are we going to a beach?”

My throat tightened. The answer was a lie I didn’t intend to tell.

“Soon,” I murmured, forcing a smile that felt brittle. “Soon.”

The flight attendant tucked the safety pamphlet into the seat pocket, her eyes flicking over my face for a moment before moving on.

“If you need anything, just press the call button,” she said, her tone as practiced as the buckling of seat belts.

I watched the plane doors close with a soft hydraulic sigh, sealing us away from the terminal, from David’s sneering “condo and car” note, from the black Mercedes that had waited like a promise of escape.

The cabin lights dimmed, and I felt the subtle shift of weight in my chest—relief tangled with a knot of uncertainty.

Above us, the cabin crew moved like a well-rehearsed dance, unaware of the storm that had pushed me onto this aircraft.

“Welcome aboard,” the captain’s voice crackled over the intercom, and the plane began its slow, humming ascent.

Ultrasound Shock

Inside the private clinic, the air was thick with antiseptic and hushed anticipation.

Dr. Aris adjusted the transducer, his fingers gliding over the gel slick of the ultrasound machine.

All seven Colemans crowded the small room, their breaths shallow, eyes fixed on the glowing monitor.

David leaned forward, his voice a strained whisper, “Is our boy healthy? Look at those shoulders—he’s a fighter, isn’t he?”

The screen flickered, a vague outline shifting under the probe, but nothing solid emerged.

Dr. Aris paused, his brow furrowing just enough to crease the calm professionalism of his demeanor.

“I’m not seeing a viable gestation,” he said, his tone even, as if reading a weather report.

A stunned silence fell, broken only by the distant hum of the clinic’s air‑conditioning.

David’s face drained of color, his mouth parting in a silent gasp.

Megan’s eyes narrowed, a flash of anger sparking across her features.

“What do you mean?” she demanded, voice sharp, “Explain yourself.”

Dr. Aris kept his composure, his hands resting on the table. “The images do not show a developing fetus. I recommend a follow‑up appointment to confirm these findings.”

The words hung in the room, heavy and unyielding, as the Colemans stared at the empty space on the monitor, each heartbeat echoing the crushing realization.

New Beginnings in a Sunlit Villa

The car pulled up to a white‑washed villa perched on a hill, the sea whispering below.

I stepped out, the scent of jasmine and salt swirling around me as the kids hopped out of the back seat, their faces bright with curiosity.

"Mom, look!" Liam shouted, pointing at the infinity pool that stretched like glass into the horizon.
