I Thought His Back Pain Was the Reason Until I Found Him Digging a Grave with My Son’s Blanket

I Thought His Back Pain Was the Reason Until I Found Him Digging a Grave with My Son’s Blanket Save

Confrontation

Greg slipped out of our bed at 2 a.m. again, his pillow left behind like a silent accusation.

I sat up, the cold floor biting my feet, and asked, “Where are you really going?”

He blinked, rubbing his lower back, “Just the guest room. The mattress is firmer; my back finally gets some peace.”

His voice was smooth, the same one that used to calm our kids after nightmares.

“That blanket,” I said, “the blue one Mom knitted for Michael is gone.”

He paused, coffee cup halfway to his lips, “I think I donated it by mistake.”

I stared at the empty hook where it always hung, feeling a prickle in my spine.

“You? The man who wouldn’t let me throw away his kindergarten lunchbox?” I whispered, the kitchen light flickering over his tired eyes.

He forced a smile, “It got mixed in with some things. We haven’t donated anything lately.”

The words tasted like lies, and the night grew heavier around us.

“Maybe we should see a doctor,” I said, the absurdity of my own suggestion ringing in the quiet.

He chuckled, “Getting old is the diagnosis, Laura.”

His hand brushed my cheek, but the chill lingered, and the bedroom felt suddenly too small.

Midnight Discovery

I lay awake, the house breathing around me, listening for the faint creak of his steps.

At exactly 2:04 a.m., a soft voice floated up the stairs, “Daddy loves you too.”

My heart hammered; Michael was thirty, Emma twenty‑eight, and no one else belonged to this house.

Silently, I slipped from the bed, the cold wood under my feet echoing my panic.

The hallway was a dim tunnel, the kitchen light a weak glow, but the voice grew clearer as I descended.

“It’s okay, sweetheart,” he murmured, the tone the same as when we soothed our children from nightmares.

My breath caught, and I pushed the back door open, the night air sharp against my skin.

In the backyard, the garden’s shadows swayed, and there he was—Greg, kneeling on the damp earth.

He clutched a bundle wrapped in the familiar blue blanket, his fingers trembling as he dug a shallow hole.

The porch light snapped on, a harsh glare that washed over his strained face.

Behind me, the deadbolt clicked, the lock turning with a final, deafening click.

I froze, the world narrowing to the sight of Greg, the blanket, and the freshly turned soil, my mind screaming for an answer that would never come.

Morning Revelations

I shuffled through the hallway, the wood creaking beneath my slippers, the house still humming with the faint echo of last night’s terror.
