I Saw My Ex on the Highway with Twins and Realized My Entire Life Was Built on Lies

I Saw My Ex on the Highway with Twins and Realized My Entire Life Was Built on Lies Save

Claire Turns Toward the SUV

Claire turned toward the SUV, her eyes meeting Adrian’s. For a moment, time seemed to freeze. He expected anger, perhaps even venom. But what he saw in her eyes was something much harder to understand. Pity.

“I need you to listen, Adrian—there’s something I’ve been hiding about the twins,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

The words hit him like a punch to the gut. He felt Vanessa’s grip tightening on his arm, but his eyes were locked on Claire’s face. The babies stirred slightly, one of them lifting its head, the familiar features causing Adrian’s heart to race.

“Adrian, don’t,” Vanessa hissed, her voice laced with urgency. But he couldn’t look away.

Claire adjusted the babies and lifted her bag of cans. “Please, Adrian. You need to know the truth.”

The distance between them seemed to stretch. Adrian’s mind was a whirl of questions, each one more urgent than the last. But before he could respond, a new element was introduced.

Flashing Red Lights

Flashing red lights appeared in the distance, casting an eerie glow on the highway. A uniformed officer stepped onto the road, his presence a stark interruption.

“Sir, can you please identify the woman beside the road?” the officer demanded, his voice authoritative.

Adrian’s heart skipped a beat. He glanced at Vanessa, who had gone pale. Her grip on his arm tightened even more.

“Adrian, don’t say anything,” she whispered, her eyes darting nervously.

But Adrian couldn’t ignore the officer’s question. He opened his mouth to speak, but the words stuck in his throat. Claire’s plea echoed in his mind, and the officer’s presence made everything more urgent.

“Sir, I need to know who she is,” the officer repeated, his tone growing more insistent.

Adrian took a deep breath, his mind racing. The truth was right there, just out of reach. He could feel the weight of the moment, the implications of what Claire had said.

“That’s Claire Bennett,” he finally managed to say, his voice steady but filled with a mix of confusion and resolve.

The officer’s eyes narrowed. “And your relationship to her?”

Before Adrian could answer, the officer’s radio crackled to life, and a voice spoke urgently. The officer’s expression changed, and he turned back to Adrian, his eyes now more intense.

“We need to get you and your fiancée off the road. Please, step out of the vehicle.”

Adrian glanced at Vanessa, who was now trembling. The officer’s command was clear, and the situation was escalating rapidly. He hesitated, but the gravity of the moment left no room for hesitation.

The Officer's Question

The officer approached the car, his face stern. "Do you know that woman?" he asked, his eyes sweeping over the scene.

Before Adrian could respond, Claire slipped away into the dense brush. The officer’s gaze followed her, but she vanished quickly, leaving behind only a crumpled plastic bag.

Adrian’s heart raced. He glanced at the bag, now half-empty of its contents. A crumpled envelope caught his eye. He reached out and picked it up, his fingers trembling.

Inside the envelope were photos. Photos of Vanessa meeting a man who looked anything but trustworthy. The man’s face was partially obscured, but the darkened alley and the suspicious exchange of envelopes told a story of deceit.

Attached to the photos was a handwritten note. Adrian’s vision blurred as he read it: ‘They’ll kill you if you don’t tell the truth.’
